Erik,

What is the service ceiling for your Rocket?

What would be an altitude to propose to AOPA, if we start a late stage letter writing campaign?

Change is glacial. I intend to still be here when it happens...

Even if it takes two steps...

Best regards,

-a-

The rocket is 24,000 - the modern certification's seem to be 25,000 for airplanes like the Cirrus turbo, the Cessna TTx, etc.

But what about a Piper Mirage?  A Cessna P210.  Pressurized airplanes.

This isn't a bill for me personally - I see it as moving toward the acknowledgement that the 3rd class medical is not making me more safe, or the public more safe, and anyway I am not getting payed to fly other people.  So the appearance of ANY altitude in there is a tip of the hat back to there is some aspect of the 3rd class medical that is needed and useful, which I disagree with.  So as far as I see it, the argument of a 3rd class medical is not needed or does something to make us safer becomes weakened by putting in an altitude restriction.  I think it should not be there at all. Let us fly at the certified altitude of the airplane.  If I can afford a Lancair Evolution or a Piper (Rocket Engineering) propjet, (not likely) let me fly that airplane as it is intended to be flown (28,000 is it?)

Does anyone know where the 14,000 limit come from? A medical study?

It seems to outside appearances it is just sort of like an off hand comprise made in haggle between someone in FAA, AOPA, congress or whatever.

I think it has something to do with the altitudes that oxygen is required at:

  • Between 12,500' and 14,000' for more than 30 minutes
  • Over 14,000'

So, if you need oxygen to breath because of standard atmospheric conditions you need a medical? What schmuck thought that up?

And now pilots that can fly without a medical can't go to a safe altitude when crossing the Sierra's or other high mountain ranges? Wow, now that's keeping people safe, eh?

I had a basal cell carcinoma, tiny little dot of a skin cancer , caused by the sun.

cut it out , piece of cake.

by the rules, your medical is suspended until documentation is submitted and approved by someone in Oklahoma.

I have a great Flight doc . He pulled some strings, contacted his friends, really took an active role.

I was cleared in only three months.

Even little things can ground you because of the wording.

I've never flown above 14000 in a private plane .I once went to 6,500.

I have a hard time believing they will go that high.  exciting

The aeromedical community is small, inbred, and has power that far exceeds its intellectual capacity.

It has occured that medical boards have reprimanded "professional witness" physicians who gave testimony basically out of line of standard practices.  This only applies to me, but I'd file complaints with the medical board(s) where the FAA physicians were licensed if/when that FAA physician's medical judgement was such that s/he felt the need to suspend any type of operating permit based on a basal cell carcinoma.  I would specifically request that the medical board provide a response indicating that said medical board had full faith in the knowledge and capabilities of the physician who would make such a finding, or, that said medical board by rule ignores the medical practices of a physician operating with one of their licenses if/when the physician is employed as a federal physician.  The laws generally protect federal physicians from malpractice liability, not from questioning the legitimacy of their medical practices while under government employement.

Not to mention that AMEs get to write off (in taxes) most or all of their annual flying expenses.

Eric I agree whoever put in the 14000 must be a dolt, there are time dues to weather or being cleared over some Class B due to traffic I was asked if I would accept Fl 180 and if so they would give me direct..how is 14000 safer than 18000, I use O2 at 9000 ft + due to my oximeter saying so, My wife does not need o@ until 12,000 and her oximeter at that level is only down to 93...the need for O2 is totally individualized I used to think I got headaches from my headsets until I acquired an oximeter some yrs ago..oh well they will screw the bill up anyway.

Hi Dan,  You got exactly what I was saying - must be a dolt.

I am like your wife, I am comfortable at 12k with O2 sat in lower 90s.  Often I feel safer at 18k than 14k - weather, or maybe crossing a great lake, etc - or maybe crossing the rockies.

Its so sad that there has to be legislation to curtail an over zealous unbridled bureaucratic regulatory authority with no accountability.  If they would just stop trying to increase my level of safety and listen, listen  to industry experts along with the what the public has to say, this route would not have been necessary.

No...  If I based my LSA business model on Pilots who could not get a III class medical moving in to the LAS category I would need to seriously rethink the entire process.  But having said this... can you imagine the guy who just sole his Mooney (Example) to purchase a 150K LSA because he wanted to remain active in aviation........  Don't know about you but, I would be very upset!

I think some LSA's are great machines but in now way compares to what we fly on this site.  I want to see this bill pass....... I just think the LSA manufacturers will crank up the lobbyist as well as the AMA to shut the Bill down.  Event though passing the Bill will be a shot of adrenaline for General Aviation there are other "pockets" that need to be maintained.  It is only going to take minimal opposition to stop this Bill dead in its track.  People who do not understand aviation will also think doing away with a pilots medical exam in any capacity will be a bad thing.......

If we want this to pass.......keep writing your representative's!

I had a psych evaluation to become a reserve police officer and then I also bought a plane after that and I'm now working on a helicopter rating.  Do you really think psych evaluation worth the paper they’re written on? :P

Well do you ?

We need to continue to fight for this it is a good thing or aviation.

My friend sells gyrocopters and I spoke with him and his friend today. His friend actually was this guy's gyrocopter CFI. Said he is a nice guy and not crazy.

Well, yes, when you try to land on the White House lawn, I'll be happy to retract that answer
