Marauder Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 I ( and Agape Avionics) have been struggling to get my Narco Mark 12D+ working correctly. Here is a video of the problem: http://youtu.be/uVdQdD1pw8I I am scheduled to be back in the shop over the holidays to have them bench check the unit itself. Up to now it has been assumed to be a seating issue with the unit in the tray. If the Narco is indeed toast, I am struggling which way to go with a replacement. The panel currently has a GTN 650, a PS Engineering 8000BT audio panel and the Narco. What would you do?
jfdez Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 Get a serviceable King KX-165 or 155. 1
carusoam Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 Send the Narco to the little town in PA from whence it came... There must be a giant pile of its brethren lying in wait of the great Narco reunion. All good radios with small broken plastic gears behind the knobs. Sorry, but you knew that was coming... Then join the debate for current nonGPS Nav/coms G vs BK... What is the minimum for back-up requirements.... I have a KX-155 in that slot... And an old portable GPS in a nice used mount built by a Mooney guy to support it... Or how about a used G430 or 430W at the end of it's unknown support life? Certified CB for a few more years to come... I used to be a bitter young guy. -a-
kerry Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 http://www.barnstormers.com/cat.php?mode=listing&main= This is a ad in barnstormers.
kerry Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 Sorry that link didn't come up right. On the barnstormer web site I searched narco repair and it was the 1st listing to pop up. 1
Cruiser Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 I would trade-in the 8000BT on the PAR200
rbridges Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 is it just a comm? or are you using it for any navigation?
rbridges Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 btw, nice hula girl on the panel. 2
Marauder Posted December 13, 2014 Author Report Posted December 13, 2014 Get a serviceable King KX-165 or 155. Any idea what that would run?
Marauder Posted December 13, 2014 Author Report Posted December 13, 2014 btw, nice hula girl on the panel. She keeps me company on those long trips when my wife can't make it.
Danb Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Chris if you could find a good used KX 165 it be great in your panel...flying tomorrow? 1
MB65E Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Spray the rack and back shell down with DEOXIT! Black aresol can with some red trim. ( @Radio shack) it's better than the standard contact cleaner. It leaves a conductive film. Longer term upgrading to a used Kx-155 (1k AMU??) from some one who just upgraded to GTN's and wants to unload it. Might try to find another used narcco, but they could all be dead horses by now! Cheers!! -Matt 1
Marauder Posted December 14, 2014 Author Report Posted December 14, 2014 When your wife can't what Chris!? Yep Dan! There are some days she just can't make it... No matter how hard I push her to come... along. Like a hunting trip or a fly-in with a bunch of crotchety Mooney owners. 1

Cheers!! -Matt The boys at Agape have adjusted the rack and hopefully deoxidized the connectors. The problem was fairly sudden, so it makes me wonder if it is a problem within the radio. My problem with going with another VOR only based unit is whether it is throwing money at a technology that will be gone in the next decade. I guess a grand on a 155 (if they could be had for that much) would make more sense than throwing in a new radio based on VORs.

If you come over, let me know. Nice gathering. 1

I guess a grand on a 155 (if they could be had for that much) would make more sense than throwing in a new radio based on VORs. the avionics shop said they would give me over $1K for my KX-155 with GS. IIRC, they said they'd give 1400.

That probably means they would resell it for $2k or more. I just looked at prices at the more reptubale resellers (Gulf Coast, Sarasota, etc.). They are all looking for $2,500 to $3,000 without a Nav head! Depressing

Andy95W Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Since you have a GTN, and an ipad to boot, all you really need is a solid com radio, like a KY -197. I installed an ICOM 210 as a #2 com as a minor alteration, but filed a 337 anyway with no problem. Nice radio, rock solid, not quite as much range as a KX-155 but way cheaper. And you're not investing in old technology that you probably don't need. Seriously, if the $h!t hits the fan all I want is to talk to somebody who can get me to VFR conditions. Or if you have the dough, one of those fancy new Garmin NAV/COMs.
Danb Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 Andy a buddy of mine has the 210 in his as no. 2 ,for about 1amu..really a nice unit esp for the bucks..thanx Chris I d/n know may wander over with my 4 lb doggie. Also may fly in morning.,forgetting how to land or going blind. 1

timpercarpio Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 I'm not sure, I just know that they repair Narco radios. 1
Bob_Belville Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 B26, you know what the right thing to do is of course. Get a GTN 750, the 650 will make a fine backup. You know you want to do it. What do you need that over-sized pickup truck for anyway? 1
