You might also consider the Dynon D-1 portable EFIS as a non-certified back-up. They are currently

having some sort of rebate program that brings the cost down to around $1,200. This is strictly a

portable, and shows GPS derived speed, altitude, and heading, but could be a real life-saver in some

conditions. I like the presentation which includes a VSI tape. Dynon says the battery should last four

hours, but I get a bit more than that. I've had my unit for almost a year now, and I find it reassuring

to see it, my vacuum AI, and the certified Mid-Continent electric AI all in agreement. I do not use the external antenna that comes with the unit, as it seems to work fine without it when near the windshield. I hate cables strung all over the panel.

The RC Allen 2600 is impressive in that it is very small and light.  I ran across a demo model at an FBO recently and took a video while playing with it.

I saw them a Sun n Fun sweet.

Chris, your still teasing.  Just remember me first when you want to trade up!

Is there a weight penalty or gain by having an all electric panel?  Does removing the vacuum pump and associated hardware weigh more than a backup alternator and wiring?
