Guys,

Right now I just stuff my little fire extinguisher into the rear pocket of my passenger seat.  What's everyone one else doing?  Since I fly a C-model with a Johnson Bar it limits my options but if you guys have some good ideas on where to mount one, I'd love to hear them.

I have split back seats and have a white halon (the original good stuff) extinguisher attached between the seats with Velcro - - never has come loose.

I have mine on the pilot side foot well as shown on the pictures. It is very accessible and out of reach of children and curious. The holding bracket is fastened with ty-wraps to the tubing structure.

I have mine mounted to the left side seat hand slide bar on my 66E. I used the stock mount bracket that came with the extinguisher and bolted two 2 piece 3/4" diameter split collars to it. Drilled and taped 10-32 holes in the split collars and then bolted to the mount plate. The whole unit attaches to the seat hand bar by claming to it on the left side towards the side panel. This leaves enough room for me to reach the hand bar and gives a solid mount point so the extinguisher is safely held and easily reached sitting just under my left leg. The bottle is mounted so that the gauge is facing up and easily seen.

Tom - Do you have any pictures?

Secured on the floor in the indentation in front of spar. With no drilling on the spar or floor!

Mine stays on the baggage compartment floor. I've had it on the back seat but I am more concerned about accident discharge than I am being able get to it. It is readily available to fight engine fire.

Here are some pictures of the fire extinguisher mounted to the seat hand bar. Let me know if anyone would like more details on how to do - I'd be happy to help.

Yeah I like that too Tomn. It wont work on my pilot seat (articulating) but perhaps on the right seat as there is only the recline function.

Instructions please.

What do you think would happen to the seat release handle when you encounter some negative G's? The spring may not be strong enough to keep the lever down.

I'm just guessing here as to the force required to lift the bar, but I don't think it takes more than about 3 lbs of force to pull my lever upward to release the seat. Assuming the extinguisher weighs 3-4 pounds it would only take a bump of -1G or a little less to release the seat.

Interesting thought guys - I had never considered it lifting the bar in turbulance. It has not ever happened and it has been through some rough sudden bumps. I think the idea of mounting it on the right seat would be good - it would solve that possible problem and still be very easy to reach in a hurry. It tucks under the seat enough that you never notice it when sitting and I suspect it would be fine for anyone in the right seat as well. I'll move it to the right side and let everyone know how it worked.

The split collars are aluminum two piece. They are readily available from McMaster Carr part no. 6436K72 ($6.52 ea.) - www.mcmaster.com. I machined a flat spot on the female threaded side of the collar then drilled and tapped for a 10-32 bolt / screw. The extinguisher mount had holes that I used to bolt the collars to - you could drill ones as needed. I think it would be fine to just tap the collar without machining the surface flat if you can't do that easily. I'd be happy to post a drawing of the split collars with the drilled/tapped holes if anyone would like - just let me know.

My (Halon) unit is mounted longitudinally between the seat rails touching the front of the back seat bulkhead. I can reach it easily, but the left rear seat passenger has to step across it. I seldom have rear seat passengers, so the convenience to me trumps the inconvenience to them. Frankly, I don't know what it is bolted to - I assume the floor.: LASAR checked it out initially, and takes it out at every annual, so that location, and how it is mounted must be OK. I also keep a smaller Halon unit in the pilot side foot well pouch.

I saw the word "machining" in the thread and was sure that would cause Don's ears to perk up... Seems I was right! :) Maybe a small donation to the Don Lathe fund and we can have some brackets manufactured?

I have a small lathe (and rudimentary, self taught machining skills),  but no milling machine. When we get the drawing and figure out what is needed, we will see what we can do. Feel free to PM me. I'm always glad to do a favor for one of our own, but I sometimes have  difficulties with material procurement.

Here is a drawing of the split collar with the 10-32 tapped hole.  I prefer to machine the flat on the bottom of the collar but I think it would work fine without it.  I'd be happy to machine these for anyone who wants them - have machine shop as part of my business.  I guess I could order them and send out to anyone who needs them.  $20 should cover the collars and the shipping.  Just let me know:  tnalle@nalleautomation.com

I am going to go ahead and order some collars and set up. I'll add a few more pictures of the mounting in my profile in a few days. I'll send out to anyone who wants them - I'll take care of the cost - just let me know.

I finally got around to remounting the fire extinguisher on the right seat today. Seems to fit fine and may be a better idea than the left seat per the posts above. My only concern would be someone hitting it with their foot when stepping into the cockpit. We'll see how it does over time. The fire extinguisher came from Spruce. Let me know if anyone wants to do this but needs the split collars machined. Just send me the collars and I'll do it for you or I can get some easily.
