In addition to fighting developer Jeff Edwards, we are focusing the community on the benefit of Oceano Airport not only to the region, but to the State of California.

Oceano Airport L52 is rich in history and has arguably the closest landing strip to the Pacific Ocean.  Come join the Mooney Ambassasdors and join us for a good old-fashioned fly in.

Details:  May 8th, 2010 9:00 a.m.

Food, flying, displays, music, community presentations, fire, rescue and emergency displays.  Space on the ramp is limited.  So mark your calendars for May 8th.

We will be parking the Mooneys together on the ramp, so RSVP please.

Help us to ensure L52 will be around for generations to come.

Of the three aviation events on May 8th of which I'm aware, my wife is most excited about the Oceano event. It's now on the calendar, so there's a good chance we'll be able to make it.

The other two events that day are the Wings of History Museum open house at South County Airport and a Poker Run that starts in Petaluma, but neither could match the allure of the beach.

Is there a website with pilot info about parking, prices, and such?

Hi Michael, and all interested in coming to Oceano Airport Celebration Day...

Probably the "one-stop" shopping for the event is found on the Friends of Oceano Airport Website:  http://www.FriendsofOceanoAirport.com

If we have a clear day, we are expecting a bunch of planes. Parking is limited.  For those wishing to camp overnight we are suggesting that you come mid-day on Friday. Otherwise there will be a ground boss on 123.45 once you land to help you find a place for your bird.  CTAF 122.70

There is no charge for the event. We are selling buttons and conducting a raffle, to raise some money to maintain the improvements we have completed.

I believe camping is $10 per night.  We have limited space in the campground because we are putting our children's area and displays in about half the campground.

The Mooney Ambassadors will have one or two Mooneys open for the public.  You know the drill...this is an old-fashioned fly in day....pancake breakfast, tri-tip sandwich lunch, free popcorn for the kids....  Please come help us support our beautiful little jewel.

Overflow parking will be at KSBP-San Luis Obispo, we are working on a shuttle from there to L52.

I'll go! I don't think I'll have a Mooney by then, but I love fly-ins. I was just to Oceano back in January for an informal AOPA fly-in. We had a good turn out and combined with another small flying group that just happened to pick the same day, we really filled the ramp. The locals were impressed and kept telling us that they didn't know when they saw so many airplanes there. It's a great destination as long there isn't any marine layer on the day you want to go. The only thing that might keep me from coming is if I'm off to inspect potential Mooneys somewhere in the country. This weekend I'm off Texas to see a few!

We will be "stacking" planes on the ramp, high wing, low wing etc.  There are 30 plus spaces on the ramp, some will be taken by display planes though.  There is a bit of parking near the Pirates Liar on the other side of the field.  We imagine that folks might pull off the taxiway into the grass to park. While we cannot encourage that, we expect it "might" happen ;)

I can understand not wanting to fly into SBP with a baby.  Yes, there is construction going on at SBP, but we are working with the county to use the transient spaces on the west side of the field. And we are working on a reasonable shuttle from Ride-On.

If we have a clear day, I would say to get to L52 by 10:00 and you are good.  Mitch and his safety ground crew are working hard to utilize as much of the apron as we can for parking planes.  Most of the displays are in the campground for this reason.

If we get a foggy day, we are still hoping for big involvement from the community. 5000 flyers are going out to the elementary and middle-school aged kids in our 5-cities area.

Hope to see you there!

Ok, this is getting exciting now.  L52 is looking sharp!  The airport is putting its best foot forward for the Celebration Day.  We are doing "creative" parking for all aircraft.  Watch for us "orange" vest marshallers along the way for parking directions as you exit the runway.  Signs at the exit intersections will direct you to a "ground" frequency so we can talk/direct you to parking.

We have lots of great displays, fun raffle items, fun for the kids, good food/drink, great big band music [thank you very much!], etc!

Our "slice of paradise" will prevail!!!  See you there.

And our weather forecast is looking positive.  No fog predicted and a high 60s day with a bit of wind. Come and practice your short field landings in a bit of a cross wind!  Tongue out

Beautiful airport and sounds like a great day is planned. We lost our small local field back in the mid 80's and flying was never quite the same since so fight hard to keep it!

If it wasnt 2136.4 NM from here and I wasnt flying a 1946 Cessna 140 turning 90 knots on a good day I would love to come. Will be with you all in spirit though. Good luck!

Thank you very much for posting.  We are doing our best to have a great event that highlights GA and GA airports.

Hello Mooney Lovers

Tomorrow is our big day...  Oceano Airport Celebration Day- L52-Oceano, California.  As a salute to our Veterans who fly/flew out of Oceano, we painted the curb stops in the parking lot with the types of aircraft they flew.  We took a bunch of heat from the County, but what the hey...  pictures are attached.  With the remaining stops we put the types of aircraft the volunteers fly...so you can imagine a bunch of Mooney curb stops!
Our Mooney banner is in place near the fuel stop, and the Ambassadors will be in the front row. Expecting seven or eight Ambassadors to come.    Mr. Edwards the developer continues his attack on Oceano.  He says Oceano is like a favorite toy that a child has forgotten and put on a shelf, and when another kid comes over and wants to play with it, the child says "no, that's my favorite".  We invited him and his baby-mama to the Celebration, except he cannot bring his dog.

http://www.FriendsofOceanoAirport is the website.
Thank you for your support

Thank you very much for the compliment. It is fun to watch the cameras on OceanoAirport.com. I can see what Mitch is up to!  HA.  It might be fun for folks to watch tomorrow who cannot come!

We have two Mooneys on the field right now, front and center. Expect four or so more tomorrow.  The Ambassadors will be full-tilt!  I think we are going to have good weather!  Horray!  Thank you for the good wishes!

Here is a summary of the event:

Oceano Airport Celebration Day was held
Saturday May 8th, 2010

This home-town fly-in was sponsored by the Santa Maria Valley 99s.  We had approximately 120 aircraft join us and 450 people.  Our common goal was to relay to the community the value of General Aviation and GA airports.

On the terminal end of the field we were joined by the Sheriff's Aero Squadron, the California Highway Patrol, Oceano Fire, Vandenberg Fire and Empirical Systems Aerospace.  At 11:00 those in the area were treated to slices of cake provided by Empirical Systems Aerospace.

In the campground activities for the children were provided by the YMCA, Cerro Alto 4-H, the American Red Cross, Rabobank, Arroyo Grande Hospital and The Exploration Station.

Stearman Square was host to Volunteer Corner, the 99s Candy booth, Pilot Registration, EAA #499, The Popcorn Brigade,  EAA #170 Weanie Wagon, Banner Airways, Angel Flight West, Pacific Aerocademy and ArtCraft Paint.

The flight line was anchored by the Mooney Ambassadors with ten Mooney aircraft.  PCF Flight School, the Civil Air Patrol, and over a hundred airplanes stretched down the ramp.

The day began with some 300 people enjoying the Pismo-5 Cities Lion's Club breakfast complete with eggs, sausage, pancakes, coffee and juice.  The EAA Weanie wagon served hot dogs and chili dogs for lunch.  The Oceano Elk's sold tri-tip sandwiches.

At noon Supervisor Aschadjian proclaimed Oceano Airport Celebration Day as the second Saturday in May from now on!  He presented Mitch Latting and Jolie Lucas with the proclamation which will be framed and placed in the pilot's lounge.

Central City Swing Band performed from 12:30 to 2:30, and we even had some dancers.  The raffle was held at 2:00 and lots of lucky participants won wonderful prizes.
Our volunteers sold buttons and raffle tickets by the hundreds.

JR Smith's Banner Airways provided a fun wing-walking demonstration themed "Rosie the Riveter."

The Popcorn Brigade served complimentary popcorn to the kids courtesy of The Great American Melodrama.  Face painting courtesy of ArtCraft Paint.
