Greetings,

Protocol question: for the Signature map: Is this states I have acted as a pilot in my Mooney...or any state in which I have piloted an aircraft?

If it's the latter, I have all by KS and MS. If it's the former, that's a much smaller (but growing) list.

Thank you fellow MooneySpacer's.

Mine is any state I have landed any plane in. The only one that wasn't a Mooney was Hawaii where we rented a 172 for some flightseeing.

This is how i do it, too, but my outlier is a square tail 172 in Juneau, Alaska.

My training was in Ohio, WV and KY, in two 172s, then a month later I bought my Mooney and began to add more states.

If I was the sole manipulator of the controls and the wheels hit the ground.

I need to fix my map. It quit for some reason. And it was missing a few states.

Mine was based off of states I have landed in.  I was both the PIC and Sole Manipulator of the Controls...  but didn't really think about it.  Just where I landed. :D

And I hope to make it up to AK this year.  And then like @Skates97, I think I'll rent in HI vs adding tanks for the extra fuel I'd want to have onboard to get there. :o

I had about 500 hours in the Mooney at the time plus about 50 in Cherokee's from my primary training but zero Cessna time. They wanted (rightfully so) a 1 hour checkout with a CFI but I just paid for the CFI to come with us for the 2 hour flight. It was great because he knew all the local landmarks for traffic callouts and played tour guide for us as well. All I did was fly the plane and look out the window. :)

I've done this quite a few times, especially in HI.  We've always just brought the instructor along for our flight as a tour guide.  There aren't as many places to rent an airplane in HI as there used to be, I was there in March and couldn't find anywhere to rent an airplane on Kauai or on the Hilo side of the big island so we rented on Oahu, previous time we rented on Maui.

Any state or territory where I as PIC have returned an aircraft to the ground and walked away from it.

Oh now that's just asking for a story. Sounds like some missing states? ;)

On the Hawai'i topic, many years ago we rented a C172 out of Kona and flew around the island and volcanoes. It was a single check out flight, although I'd just done tailwheel so it was easier to deal with the huge crosswinds. The instructor pulled power on me right after takeoff with a big crosswind so I got the sense that was his main concern.

Great flight. The area over volcanoes park was very busy so definitely would suggest a local brief. The guide idea is a good one.

Just searching around it looks like there's at least one place to rent on the Kona side.

Well, I can still walk so it's not that bad :)  Quite a few years ago in Hokkaido, Japan, I went for a sight-seeing flight in a 4-place piston Mitsubishi.  Don't remember the model. I told the pilot that I had my license and he let me fly it once in the air but he didn't let me land.   That I regret.

Ok that's not exactly a Scott Crossfield "i crashed a secret fighter powered by HF and Drano" story but it still sounds pretty fun.

Back in '95 I was going to some aviation seminar in downtown Phoenix. It was at a hotel. I took my 2 year old son with me and he was riding on my shoulders. When I entered the hotel, this old guy saw the kid and started playing with him. It was Scott Crossfield.

I did that for a flight on Oahu a couple of years ago.  Rented a DA-40 from George's.   Did a cross country check out to Lanai and have a great time.  GF rode in the badge.

My map is any state that I have personally landed a plane in.  And that is a wide variety or aircraft.  I have flown something like 70 different make/model..  Hawaii has been AA-5B Tiger many years ago and the DA-40.  Plus Grob 102 and 103 and 2-33 gliders on the North Shore. Utah and Oklahoma were T-38A.  New Mexico was AT-38B. New Jersey was A-10A.  Florida was A-10A and M20K.  Maine was GA-7 and C-172 float plane.
