Looking for suggestions on where to mount a JPI930.  The Loran is being removed, and old engine instruments are being removed.  Do I flush install it on the right side of the panel, or mount it on the left side somewhere?  Just looking for a temporary place to install until I can do the rest of the panel in a year or so.  Anyone need any old instruments being removed?

Right side works fine for me. The display is plenty big to see easily.  You’ll also have to mount the RAD top middle of the left panel.

Thanks for the input.  I was worried it might not fit.  I like your panel.  Nice and clean but updated.

Right side.  Similar to @Ragsf15e’s panel pic.

I mounted my edm930 on the left panel.  I’m old and it’s difficult to see on the right side panel. I really like having everything in front of me.  Lee

That’s a really nice panel!  If you have room to do that, it’s an excellent option.

If you mount in the pilot side I’d recommend the right side of the pilot side vs left. My initial panel had engine monitor and standby attitude on the right of a legacy G500 but when I upgraded to the TXi I moved the G5 and MVP engine monitor to the right of the TXi and I find it easier for me and a copilot to see and it’s in eyeline when moving between GPS and PFD.

You might consider the smaller EDM-900 on the pilot side of the panel... easier to integrate, especially for a "temp" install and it is still very readable in front of you versus putting it over on the right side where the-930 is likely the better choice.  I put mine in 9 years ago and would choose it again.  I also plan to keep it during my TBD panel upgrade whenever I choose an autopilot and PFD path as I feel it is better than any other option out there.

I have a EMD-900 in my Beechcraft.  I wanted the larger screen for better visibility as I get older as I plan to keep this plane.   I ordered the EDM-930 when there was a rebate after Oshkosh already.  Just awaiting shipment.

Understood... a 930 on the right would be my second choice over a 900 on the left.  Either unit is the best available, IMO.   I like Lee's implementation of his 930 on the left, but that of course requires a smaller PFD and new panel, which it doesn't sound like you're planning to do in this step.

I just sent my 900 back to get updated for the CiES fuel senders and hope your incoming 930 will be compatible.  That is a worthy option now or in the future as you plan your upgrades.  I would advise that you install the 930 with enough of a "service loop" in the harnesses to accommodate future relocation.  They should all be long enough to allow for that unless you or your installer cut them short on the initial installation.  You really, really don't want to do that!

Another vote for the left of center. The closer you can get it to your line of sight, the better :-) Since it's only temporary go with the easiest (cheapest) install location.  Length of service loop is great reminder and same with CiES senders.  If not already set up in the 930 you receive, it's a simple request to JPI, they can email you the software which you can upload to a jump drive and install directly into the unit at any point once it's on your panel.

If you’re worried about not noticing a problem if it’s right side, both 930/900 comes with annunciation light/display to mount right in front of you to get your attention.

The downside to this is that the warning thresholds cannot be adjusted for the 900/930 series like they could for the 700/800 series.  They're locked in to POH settings, which are generally not conservative.  Example, I try to keep my CHT's at 380°F or below, and will take action if they're above 390, and especially if they're climbing.  the POH setting is 450 or 475° and by then it is way too late to potentially save a cylinder.  I don't even remember what that limit is because I never operate near it!  The warning light can also be a nuisance if you get to 2730 RPM on a cold day takeoff, or have oil pressure >90 psi on a cold start like I routinely do.  A quick glance to the monitor itself confirms I do not have an issue, and that is easy with mine on left side of the panel.

But at the end of the day, just having a capable engine monitor anywhere in the panel AND knowing how to interpret is the most important goal.  :)

Not entirely true, the JPI 900 has what it calls pre-alarms for EGT,CHT, Oil Temp, and low fuel I think. You can adjust your pre-alarms to a more conservative range, but you can’t raise them.
For your oil pressure, IIRC there’s 2 warnings, if just outside normal range you’ll get a yellow warning light, but way outside it will be red, so the color alone gives you a good idea of how severe the problem is.

There were no pre-alarms available when I installed mine in 2015.  I just got it back after sending it in for an update (for CiES senders) so perhaps I'll have that capability now.  Thanks

I agree with @ArtVandelay, at least on my 930 (from 2012, but updated), there’s pre alarms.  I set them up… they were a confusing pia to set up, but they are available on the 930.

I also have mine on the right side. The designer in me loves the clean organization of having it on the right, and it is not hard to see at all, but having it on the left would have been more convenient.

I would have the placard with power settings removed, it’s not required on my 78J, could have put the JPI there. I push the speed brake placard high on the panel so it was hidden from casual view.

I don’t have a problem with it on the right.
