Two lovebirds, Daffy and her eagle were out flying one day, VFR! They were soaring and having a good time searching for thermals. Suddenly the eagle spots this big mean red looking Mooney speeding right at them! He yells duck! ... duck! ... I said DUCK!! Daffy turns her angry face to him but before she could scream ...NO!! EAGLE!!! Splat! Ouch! ...so sorry Daffy!

How is the dog? Was it in the plane?...maybe he tried to jump to...you know...fetch the freshly kil...forget it...never mind!!CoolLaughing

On a serious note glad you're Ok Bryan. It would be interesting to see how the insurance will handle it. If they'll paint the entire airplane or not!

Once again the Mooneys steel roll cage has proven it's worth for safety!

Had this strike occured without the steel bow behind the windscreen , it would have folded into the cockpit. Note the pictures with the bow showing through the aluminum which was deformed around it. Pic# 1,Pic#3

I propose the deformation was already funneling the duck into the cockpit but was stopped by the steel frame.

Asbestos Britches On,( which happens to be my new super power).

I am wondering, did the 201 windshield aerodynamics hel avoid some of the collision?  Would the original windshield have caved in?

Glad everyone and the dog are OK.

I bet this is more than a couple of weeks to get this fixed.   Which windshield conversion (STC) did you put in?

And I complain about the cost of shot these days...that was an expensive kill.  IT is confirmed.  You may place the appropriate decal upon your rudder.  Four more and you are an ace.  If you are going to take a strike this appears to be a good one.  Nearly missed...unfortunate.  Good job flying the airplane.  Did you take a pic in the air right after?  THAT would not be what I would be focusing on (an aperature) I'd be thinking...come on windscreen don't fail me now...and checking my shorts.  Glad all O.K.  Good excuse for a "touch-up".

Of course the accident occurred because there was no flight plan filed. Frown

Had a flight plan been on file the eagle and daffy would have received a traffic alert Innocent and been able to avoid the intruder without mishap Smile

yes it's the 1/4 thick window! Also the pup was on the ground my friends had to get my stuff and return it to be at my home field. The duck didn't come inside thankfully just a few feathers and plexi glass! I had 1 second to react from the time I saw it...not much at 160MPH! And I had the LASAR window...and it's at LASAR. The thing that'll take the longest from what we know is the window arriving...maybe a week from now! I expect the plane back mid May...paint after so around the 20th of May i'll have her back.... WHAT AM I GONNA DO for 3 weeks!!!!!! !

This is a good example of what's called in classic Newtonian mechanics a perfectly Inelastic collision. Momentum is ofcourse conserved but kinetic energy is not. Some is dissipated in the form of sound (the splat of the duck), heat, the dent on the Mooney, etc!

Yes, it was definitely duck pha-Thia-!! My friends say if I flew slow like they do then I wouldn't have to worry about stuff like this! Also I'll clarify I was much higher than the pictures...that was takeoff. I was between 250-350ft when the duck hit.

Bryan--

This reminds me of some pictures I saw from a fellow who hit a goose landing in upstate NY--on landing, one leg and one wing were hanging on each side of the vertical stabilizer, with the body squished almost a foot into the leading edge. At least your repair will be quicker!

BTW, what is the round piece inset into the top of the right-hand window?
