Mooneyspace Loan-a-Tool Program

The motorcycle forum I used to visit had a great tool loan “program” for those once in a blue moon tools like drivetrain alignment tools. Something like that would be very helpful to me right now.

I need to crimp some of the TE solid barrel contacts and can’t get over the $800 price for the TE 58541-1 crimper. Does anyone have a pair they’d be willing to rent? I’ll pay postage both ways and would be willing to make a donation to your gas fund.

TIA

It appears that I don’t have this specific tool.
Thanks,

David

There’s a reason Matco is able to sell such expensive break-in proof tool boxes and each mechanic owns his tools individually.

it’s beyond me, but even loaning tools to a neighbor is a risk. I always give a speech when lending that iterates up front that I expect them to hand deliver it back to its’ home as soon as your done, I will be pissed if I have to inquire in the slightest about where my stuff is.

I joke that I live far enough in the country that we went on a 3 day weekend get away, and left the garage door open.  And when we got back there were MORE tools that when we left.  A neighbor returned an angle grinder he had borrowed. :D

Did the neighbor leave the door open? :D

Yes.  He figured since I left it open....

But the house is a raised range and the garage door is in the back below the level of the yard in front.  So NOT visible under you walked around the back.

And behind the house is woods for about 100 yards, then a farm.

I really like the idea of having a loan-a-tool program, maybe extend it to loan-a-hand too? I'd love to share the tools I have as well as helping fellow mooniacs if they need a hand, it's a great way of learning.

I'm located in KSGR, just in case someone needs a tool/a hand.

Being proactive on a loan a tool program, what do you think is the best way? To ask through a new thread or should we set a Google sheet or something like that where everyone can indicate: mooneyspace name, location, tools. Like a directory of tools.

Ref loaning tools.

We initially had a real problem doing that at the factory, even dealers were bad about returning special tools.

So when I took over Product Support I started selling the tools, if you didn’t want to return them fine, after all you paid for them, but if you returned them in the condition they were shipped to you, I refunded you your money.

People were very quick with returning tools, and once it was explained to them they were fine with the new program.

This is the way

You’d be stupid to loan out equipment to a stranger for anything less than replacement value. It’s really easy, just use PayPal friends and family both ways.  I had a Mooney pilot steal my damn checklist after he borrowed it to make a quick copy of it.  He lied to my face that he lost it (in less than one hour) and I flew home without one…

I like that approach as well for the obvious reasons.

But I still have little confidence in this since its a lot of work for someone to make rugged shippable boxes for some of the delicate bigger tools - like travel boards. Seem like it would need someone willing to put the time and investment in to make it work as a small part time business and get a reasonable fee out of it..

I’ve had the worst luck with lending and borrowing.
If I lend I expect it to be returned as lent.  I’ve had people keep the items, return broken or damaged.
I have never, and would never do that. I have in fact many times, gone out and purchased the item new because I was too ashamed to return it in lesser condition.
For this reason, I prefer not to borrow at all, unless I don’t have a choice or it’s cheap enough for a one use thing that I’m not concerned, or it’s not easily broken or damaged.
I still lend, but mostly because I don’t know how to say know without feeling like a jerk.
I do have an agreement with a few fellow acclaim owners, where we all have extra parts and if one of us is in a bind we send the part and then the recipient replaces with a spare as soon as they can. It’s worked out pretty well.  I sent a buddy a turbo, and he sent another one a cylinder.  I have a spare turbo, wiring harness, plugs, prop governor… between the four of us we have quite a few goodies

I agree, most Mooney space guys in my experience are good people.

I would love to see someone make a profit, altruism is rare and nothing wrong with making a profit.

Just call it a tool rental program instead of s tool lending program.

Let’s face it, if I’m paying my expectations are higher and I expect quick shipping etc., when your asking a favor, you take what you can get and better be appreciative too, even if it’s a week or two late and kind of beat up etc.

Maybe one of the used parts sellers would be interested in tool rental? They already have a business set up to ship, receive payments etc. ?

So while we’re taking about lending, borrowing or renting tools I’m replacing my shock discs on my M20R and in need of the tool for the nose gear shock disc replacement. I’m located in central FL. and would be interested in borrowing or renting the tool for a weekend.
