Sure, why not. You may have to pay for my time.

I usually tell people to call Frank first. If he is booked up I will help you out. I like Frank and don't want to steal his business.

That’s kind of you indeed! I’ve heard good things about Frank. Too bad KCHD is 1700nm from my base…

I have a power point I made years ago illustrating and explaining how to check preloads.

I don't have anywhere to host it. DM me your email if you want it.

@Shadrach Send it to me and I'll host it on my server....

Lasar replied to an email saying they do rent them. They stopped renting them for awhile so that led to some internal confusion. We have it on the schedule to work on tomorrow so we will try without.

If you can, take some pictures of a few key steps in the process, to complete this thread.

Done. I forwarded it uncompressed. It’s well within the size limits of Hotmail.

Co Pilot side is done. It was super easy. We weighted the tail and jacked the wings. Removal was very simple. To reinstall we put two 2x6 under the tire and let the plane down. The weight compressed it enough to slide the bolt in. The stack in the middle are the old ones.

The pilot side was a little more difficult to the get bolt out. Reassembly was easy. Working on nose gear now.

Those shock discs you removed are older than you are . . Lol. Good job getting them changed!

Not quite, but I get your point. We are starting the nose gear now.

We got the front disc out, but we found it's more difficult to put them back. We will work on it more tomorrow.

What’s the best price today for the donuts?

Call Herber Aircraft in El Segundo, CA. Ask for Dwayne Johnson (not that Dwayne Johnson).  I think I paid $103 a piece last year. Spruce was selling them for ~$150 then but now they’re $165 and likely climbing.

That's usually where the tool, or something, is needed.

I think Aviall (now Boeing) is the only Distributor for this part and that even Aircraft Spruce buys them from Aviall. So if your mechanic has an account with Aviall he is probably getting the best price.

Lord is still a going concern, they are owned by Parker Hannifin. The Shock discs are made in northern PA. They have a geographically diverse distribution network through out the world.  Aviall may sell shock discs, but I have seen no evidence that they’re the exclusive distributor.

I contacted Lord in November 2015 since I had two Mooneys that needed shock discs and was told that they didn't sell to end consumers but that they distribute through Aviall. Then I contacted Aviall to see if I could get an account. They said I had to buy through one of their dealers. I signed up for a business account through Aircraft Spruce and got a 10% discount on the shocks discs. They were out but had them drop-shipped from Aviall in Dallas.

Agree that they don’t sell direct to consumer. I can’t speak to 2015. Perhaps there are multiple layers from manufacture to retailer and Aviall/Boeing is the first.  What I can speak to is my purchase.  I bought 11 Lord J-11968-14 discs last year from Herber Aircraft for just over $100 each when spruce was selling them for over $150. These were brand new, in box with certificates of conformity.  I bet they were more through Spuce in 2015 wih a 10% discount.

Close. They were $105 minus the discount ($94.50). Last November (2021) the first thing I did on the airplane that I bought was change the shock discs. For some reason Spruce only gave me 7% off of $133.75 each (124.38). I see now that they are back to 10% off of $164.95 (148.46). I'll keep Herber in mind the next time. I just went online and requested a quote. We should have one section of Mooneyspace about best prices on items that we all use and ones who support Mooneyspace yearly could have access to that section.

This mornings idea. It got us close but we were limited and determined it's not possible this way.

Those discs are really compressed. The discs below have a date code of 1967. They continued to meet specs per the MM but when I jacked up the plane on a very cold day, I noticed they were slow enough to expand that I knew they were not expanding during pattern work in winter time. The new ones are just over a year old. I look forward to testing their cold-weather performance when the temps get down into the 20s.

A few pics of the jack adapter. The only reason I have square on top is that is what I had available. The purpose of the round tube on the bottom is just to keep it on the jack so it's thin wall.

Anybody know if there is something that can be applied to these discs to help protect them from the elements and retard the degradation?
