what is your favorite luggage to travel with in your Mooney?  I have a 1990 J and have been just using a duffel bag.  the duffel finally wore out, and need to buy another travel bag.  Usually 1-5 nights.  I put it behing the backseat

I've been using an Ebags carryon with backpack straps for years for use in both my plane and the airlines.  Since it doesn't have wheels, a ton of space is freed up for your stuff.  Plus it has a lifetime warranty.  Here's the one I have and highly recommend:

I like the 22" roller carry-on from Costco (Kirkland brand). I have owned only 2 in the last 20 years and this one is still in good shape. If I need more space I use a backpack or small duffel that I can put on top of the roller once I take it out of the baggage area to get to the FBO, car, etc.

Typical roller has worked fine for me, augmented by a backpack when I need more.   Fits in the hatch easily.

I use a duffel.

For my wife, I measured the hatch opening and went to the Samsonite outlet and bought the largest wheeled bag that would fit. Two wheels, half buried in the bag. I have to put it in at an angle to fit.

No surprises that Mooney pilots travel with cheap luggage!

I prefer backpacks and duffel bags. No hard luggage because of the shape of baggage compartment and baggage door. Duffel bags can mush to shape unlike those roller cases.

Plus, when we travel by plane we can leave some of our stuff in the plane and only take what we need for that night or segment.

Traveling for business... Always the roller bag for cruising through manufacturing facilities and offices…

Traveling with family… simple canvas bag with handles… some have zippers some don’t…. easy to reach in during the flight…

The cool thing… soft and flexible and never runs out of volume… :)

Everything gets weighed….

For Mikey…. Find the back pack that Stephen can ride around on your back…. That works for about two years… kids love that.  It can eliminate strollers from your life!

Best regards,

Apparently, none of you travel with the likes of my beautiful and very fashion conscious wife.

A. Non-wrinkle be damned, fashion takes precedence. You don't wad anything in a duffel

B. Anything less than 3 shoe changes a day is violation of the "Imelda Law"

C. Hair care requires 4 different bottles, and lots of it. More volume than the AeroShell 15W-50 I carry with me.

D. All clothes must be folded and strapped down.

E. Outer wear must be ready for anything from arctic survival to a walk in the Mojave regardless of time of year or forecast.

F. Carry nothing, if it does not have wheels it is not luggage. If it is not luggage it needs a porter.

For that reason I use TravelPro. I find I can actually get three medium Travel Pros in my Ovation, plus attendant small cases. The TravelPro is the most durable luggage next to my LuggageWorks bag which is waaaay too heavy (but bullet proof) for light plane use. The TravelPro is light weight, durable but most of all, highly repairable. It also glides like glass.  Me? I use a Red Head duffel from BassPro (she hates it)

1. Calculate avgas savings over flying a brand B the same route

2. Use the savings to buy what you need at your destination

3. Enjoy the faster climb rate with the empty baggage compartment :)

Back in the day when my Father went from a C-210 to a C model mooney, my Mother would pack in pillow cases for longer trips, the C-210 was 1970’s station wagon sized, the little Mooney wasn’t.

Real duffle bags are horrible, you stuff everything into a fabric pipe, in the Army we used “aviator kit bags” which is similar to a duffel bag in that it’s tough fabric, but it’s rectangular and the whole top of the thing zips closed, there are civilian versions available in different colors and sizes. But they are usually big, and big means heavy for us older people

Google aviator kit bags and see if that will work for you.

We don’t travel a lot but we use fabric grocery bags we got off of Amazon, fabric with handles and a zipper and just the right size, and make my CB self happy.

It is so sad that a kid brought up in such a loving and solid fixed wing family would grow up a rotorhead.

I’ve not flown Rotary wing in 20 years, but do miss it.

Way back I figured out that to fly I needed a rich relative that was willing to pay my way to fly, so I had my Uncle pay for it. Army was my only option as I didn’t have the pedigree for AF or Navy, joined the Army as a Private and worked my way up.

If I could afford it, I’d have a Hughes 269 or 300, nothing is as much fun as a helicopter. 500 would be the ticket, but way out of my price range.

We use two hard case travelpro medium suitcases, and one titelist duffel for items that who cares if wrinkled plus miscellaneous stuff. One bag for keurig coffee maker. All fit nicely is luggage area of the long body. My wife similar to Gee bees items need to be packed nicely. We don’t bring extra stuff

I have been using the same 5.11 Backpack since the 1990's. That backpack has literally travelled the world. It doesn't matter if I am going overnight or for 2 weeks, if it can't fit in that backpack...it doesn't go.

I've been using my Swiss Army carryon roller bag for 15 years. It fits in the Mooney easily. It fits in the overhead (class A) baggage compartment. I can put a weeks worth of cloths in it. It has been around the world a few times.

It is getting a bit tattered and my wife keeps trying to replace it. None of the new ones she buys can hold a candle to old reliable. Swiss Army doesn't make this model anymore and sometimes I look for one on EBay, but I haven't found one yet. I saw one on the baggage belt a few months ago and was tempted to offer to buy it from the owner.

I have gone to Briggs and Riley for my travel luggage.  Lifetime, no questions asked warranty.  Airlines damage it, B&R will repair or replace.

I do a lot of international travel was was getting about 18 months of most bags.

But not cheap.
