  1. I’m curious how you fixed the lights in the Moritz. I recently lost two backlights on mine.
  2. Here's a picture of the valve face showing the asymmetry. I also included a picture of the seat where you can see an inconsistency where the valve is making contact with the seat.
  3. @JimB Yes, I'm a Savvy customer. I sent them the pics of all the valves, but I noticed that the exhaust valve on cylinder #4 was asymmetric and pointed it out specifically when I posted the ticket. They agreed that it looked like a good candidate for lapping. @M20F asked about the compression of the cylinder. This was just an oil change and so a compression test was not completed. The last compression test was done in March during the annual inspection. I don't have the log entry in front of me, but I do know that none of the compressions were low enough to be on the "let's keep an eye on this one" list.
  4. Huy was the first one I called. He was the tech who told me it’s not worth the labor and to fly with the valve as is until it fails a confession test. The good news is that I found a tech to do the job - Mike at Scud Air Solutions at KOGD. I have an appointment next week. Just for fun, I’ll endeavor to update this thread with a before and after pic of the valve after it gets some hours following the lap job. Thanks to every who offered suggestions and advice. It is much appreciated!
  5. Precision Air Power at Bountiful is a no-go. They only work on cylinders when pulled from the engine. Do any of the other Utah folks here have suggestions for an A&P who would be willing to lap the valve in place? Thanks!

  7. @philiplane Thanks for this info about lapping a valve on high time engines. Before I bought the plane, the engine had a top overhaul less than 800 hours ago. So while the engine is at TBO the cylinder itself doesn't have all that many hours.
  8. @KSMooniac Thanks for the response. I should have mentioned that I am a Savvy customer and they provided options for more accommodating shops. The recommendations were in Grand Junction, CO and Boise, ID so not the most convenient, but doable if there aren't any local Salt Lake area options.
  9. When I change the oil on my Ovation I pull a spark plug from each cylinder and take some pictures with a borescope. My last round of pictures shows that the exhaust valve on my #4 cylinder is showing a bit of asymmetry. I had thought getting the valve lapped in place was a pretty common maintenance task, but A&Ps at two different shops that I have used in the past aren't interested in lapping the valve. One said that he doesn't believe in borescope pictures on high time engines (I'm right at TBO) and it isn't worth doing the work. The other said that it is a lot of labor and his recommendation is to wait for the cylinder to fail a compression test and then replace it. I'm based in Salt Lake City, so my real question is if any of the other Utah based pilots have an A&P they would recommend. If you have a suggestion for an A&P please let me know. My other questions are whether or not anyone else has faced this issue, and if you think I'm off base in lapping a valve on an engine that is at TBO.

This is an old thread, but I searched Mooneyspace and didn't see any reference to the gear warning switch on the Ovation, so I thought it worthwhile to share in case another late model owner is chasing down a gear warning issue. I recently had an inop gear warning on my Ovation and had to track down the gear warning switch. I looked at the throttle cable right behind the panel and didn't see the switch that is pictured earlier in this thread. I reached out to Savvy and @kortopates pointed me toward looking on the engine side of the throttle cable. And, sure enough, right where the cable attaches to the throttle body is the small switch as seen in the picture below. Hope this helps someone down the line. Cheers, jamie

  13. Glen, I have the same tug. Tell me about the gimbal you installed to make turning easier. I love the power of the tug, but it is a bit of a beast to make turns with it in the stock form. Thanks!

  16. I literally just walked in the door from a quick day trip to Bryce Canyon in my 310hp Ovation. Density altitude was 9,400’ I was carrying four people and just a few pounds under max gross and was off in 3000ish feet and climbing at better than 500’ a minute. Do you have the POH yet?   17. I have very recent Aeromotors experience with great turnaround time. Priority USPS shipping on Friday 4/1 and received it back in my hands on Monday 4/11. Just over a week including shipping! One difference is that my Ovation uses a Weldon pump so if there are supply chain issues with Dukes parts that could lead to a different experience than mine.
  18. I too suggest Aeromotors. They have done two pumps for me in the last month and both were turned around quickly. It's kind of a unique process, you ship the pump to them with a check and return shipping label enclosed, they perform the overhaul, and use the shipping label you sent them to send it back. The pump arrives back on your doorstep with not a word of communication.
  19. No one has responded yet and this might not be the best suggestion you’ll get due to location (a couple of hours flight from Greeley), but Kerry McIntyre in Evanston WY is a Mooney expert. I was just at his shop yesterday and he was telling me about the wrecked TLS he rebuilt from pretty much nothing.   21. No idea about the button and light marked EDM. The cable end in the photograph doesn't look similar to the data port for my EDM-700. I've circled in red the EDM-700 data port that is on my panel. There is a JPI specific cable that connects into the port on the panel.   23. Thanks to @CAV Ice for pointing out the note on the Type Certificate Data Sheet. So, from a regulatory perspective, we have the TCDS authorizing the removal of the vacuum system, but don't we still have an issue with the Supplement for the FIKI system including the requirement for a vacuum system? In reading the TCDS, it includes the placard language that flight into known icing is prohibited so we cannot rely on the TCDS alone.
  24. Thanks @ilovecornfields, it’s good to know there is at least one FIKI Ovation without a vacuum system! Your logic makes perfect sense, and thus violation risk (or overzealous IA grounding risk) shouldn’t be an issue.
  25. @hais That's a good question! I don't know if glass STC's reference FIKI. I have steam gauges, so at the moment I need my vacuum pumps. This becomes a more significant question for me as I contemplate the future of my panel.
