Found a 330 light bulb in the fuel selector circle of my 1981 M20J after a flight today. This is 4 flights after finding a little screw sorta thing (base for the bulb maybe) near the same area. Anybody have any ideas where the bulb may have come from? Couldn’t immediately find a spot missing a bulb. The bulb by the flap indicator is still there. The map light under the yoke is still there too. I have LED lighting on the glare shield so that’s not it either. Is there a light normally in the fuel selector area? Thanks!

On some airplanes theres a hidden light behind the instrument panel directly above the fuel selector which is supposed to light the selector up at night.  Mine is there, but it just looks like a light socket with a bunch of wires around it.  That would be my guess though.  Prepare to “assume the position”… on your back under the instrument panel, wedged in tight.  It’s easier with the seat removed but probably not required for this one if you’re skinny and flexible.  Rule #1 of “the position”, don’t break anything climbing in /out or feeling around in there!

The whole light assembly that Rags has described….

Looks a lot like the lights that are used for gear status… except clear in color…

Look for a lens with a twist knurl on the side of it…

The lens probably fell off first… then the bulb…

The screw sort of thing is probably the housing where the lens was once… those screw things are called threads…

The whole device can be purchased from AS…

Sooo… if the empty socket is still pointing at the fuel selector… put the bulb back in, screw the lens holder in to hold the whole thing together... Adjust the iris to open…  Fly on!

Did you know these lights have a push to test function?  Try it…

How does all that sound?

:)

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

Best regards,

My first thought was the compass.  There's a flip up window on the top of my compass housing where you put a lightbulb that can easily get flipped up and the spring eject the bulb.  I've had to replace mine before...GE 327 28 V, but I think the 330 is the 14V equivalent.

There's a map light on the bottom of your yoke that uses this bulb.

I'd suspect that one as well if you found it in the fuel selector
