Hi All,  This is a relay associated with my alt-air door light.  It seems to be going bad - decided with the help of my mechanic.  Symptoms are that the wire connector seems loose but its loose from inside the box.  Anyway, what I see at the pilot see is the alt-air door blinks on at a high speed blink/barely on, at slow speed flight like pattern or on the ground during tax with engine on, but not at cruise speed.

So I want to buy a new relay.  Help?

That’s a “Micro” switch not a relay.  Part number will be in the wiring schematic.

Probably a rocket part. You will need to look at the STC documentation. It looks like a microswitch, if you take it off you can probably get a number off of it and get a new one from DigiKey or some electronics parts distributer.

I have lots of wiring diagrams deep in my logs lock box - I’ll look

You think?  The annunciation panel is original m20k and I was guessing so is the micro switch.

Things to consider with some Alt air doors…

1) They are often automatically opened as the filter gets clogged….

2) As they open, they trigger the alt air switch/light…

3) They typically use a magnet to hold the door closed…

4) The magnet strength and size have been selected to open when the engineers decided would be a good indication of the filter getting dirty… or covered with ice and snow… or leaves… or squirrels…

5) Over time the magnet may lose its strength, or the switch mount may fall apart…

So…. Verify the filter is clean, and the alt air door is staying closed, the magnet hasn’t failed…

Then blame BK…. Because that is a fun thing to do….  :)

I don’t think BK has anything to do with the alt air system…

6) The alt air door is a pretty important system on the day that you need it…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

Best regards,

Is the door open in this pic?

open intentionally, or just hanging open?

I tried to orient the pic, but without deep K knowledge, I went with what I had…   :)

Best regards…

It may benefit from some adjustment, as usually there is some adjustment room for them to set them to trip in the proper condition.

You might try getting a little mirror behind it to see if the other side has a part number exposed.   There should be a part number on it somewhere, and if you're lucky it might be on the exposed side.   Otherwise try loosening the fasteners and pushing it one way or other and tighten it back down.

Or just take it off, check for a p/n, and try putting it back on with small adjustment.

It may come to that - but I was hoping to only r&r that delicate part once.

@aviatoreb, This looks like the part number to me, above "OCT 04 1996" but upside down. Wipe it off, but be careful using cleaning chemicals lest you clean off the part number, too . . . .

Maybe ?889 1609?, I can't make out all of the numbers between the screws, and have no idea how many there should be.

See if you can tell what is causing all the grime over the part number…

Looks like aluminum dust is spreading in the area, and getting on the yellow material as well…

Could aluminum dust be a problem turning your switch on?

I may be stretching on this one…. Not even PP thoughts now….  :)

The date stamp on it is Oct 4 1998, is that somewhere around where your 1981 K was converted to a Rocket?

The wire is notably loose and same symptom last year was fixed with some crimping.   So I don’t think it’s that but good call!

By Jove I think you are right Sherlock!

I'd have to check the manual/SB where they all got converted to automatically opening, but are you sure it's supposed to be open partially like that? It may be on the cusp of triggering causing your indication like what @EricJ said. It's a fragile looking system having peeked at it on my "stock" K.

I wouldn't put much stock into the part number on the side of the metal bracket as it'll be the Mooney/rocket full assembly, unless you want to go that route.

If you remove the micro switch itself you'll most likely be able to search the actual manufacturer part number on digikey or similar and buy the $3 part and replace it.

Thanks for the comment I’ll check.

Is that a fuel line that is ty wraped past a little filter that is making a bend into the engine compartment that is not wearing any fireproofing sleeve?

My AP says that door you pointed out is the ram air scoop.  He said the door in question is actually on the the microswitch side.
