Holy smokes.   Good catch.

We were taking it apart and kept looking at things.  Couldn't see anything amiss.  In fact, it looked basically perfect.  Split the case and looked at the bearings, cam, lifters, etc.  All really really nice.  Lifted out the crank. Checked all it's surfaces.  Perfect.  Looked at that bearing half and "aha!".

Might I add it was ridiculously hot at 2pm flying back across PHX.  I told Rich I was considering heading east out of chandler just to climb to 15k for some cool air.

Very interesting thread. Am curious how common this issue is with bearings disinegrating, how long ago it might have happened, and what the failure mode would have looked like had it not been picked up...

Anybody ever create/post a video on removing the suction screen from an O-360?

AGL did, should be on here somewhere, might have been a Io-360 though.

Thanks.  I'll search and see if I can find it.   Mike Busch' video is correct, that inspection doesn't happen often enough.  I'd like to have a video to share with any mechanic working on my a/c.

Here is what a screen looks like on my O-360 from my M20c....

It is such a pain in the ass to check that now that I know mine is clean I will just have it done in annuals from now on and not each oil change.  It is so hard to check that you should really be there for the inspection to keep everyone honest......

What are other people thoughts on these oil screens and how often to check and is there an easier way to do it?

At annual last year, the replacement IA (happy retirment, John!) told me that my engine still had the original screen in it from overhaul before my ownership in 2003 . . . He was expecting lots of gunk. It came out clean. Go O-360!

Hope your rebuild goes quick and easy!

Great pics Rich!

Thanks for sharing the details...

That is in the holy cow category... that doesn’t happen very often around here...

The damaged bearing, not the pic sharing...:)

Best regards,

It's not that difficult.  I did it every annual on my C.  It just takes effort.

My favorite saying to my two boys was, "it just takes effort". They hated that saying.

I took the cases to the local engine shop (Aircraft Engine Specialists) to have them clean and do NDT on the cases. They looked at them and said they needed to go out. I’m sending them to Nickson’s Machine shop in Santa Maria CA, which is where the shop recommended. They were nice enough to give me a shipping box In exchange for a promise of bagels some morning soon.

It’s on their Facebook page. I did mine a few weeks ago. The only difficult part is the safety wire but it wasn’t terrible. I’m glad I did it and think I could get it done quite a bit faster next time.

Hmm, it looks like the Nickson's Machine Shop/president was playing fast and loose with the employees' 401k funds!:o

The head man from Nickson’s  called me yesterday and said that my cases were packed really good! I told him it was his box. He said it looked familiar.

I think he is going to do a good job on my cases.

I just shipped my crank, cam, rods and lifters to OK. (Aircraft Specialty Services). They should get there by the end of the week.

Talked to Warner Propeller, they are sending a truck to my hangar to get my prop, Governor and engine hardware. They re-plate engine hardware. I’m sending everything steel to them, including the turbo mounting brackets. It’s going to be awesome!

Send the cylinders to Ly-Con while your at it!

I’m going to buy Contintal Prime. I’ll keep the ones I have for spares. They have lots of time left on them.

I bought brand new cylinders for my plane and Dropped shipped them straight to Ly-Con. They will receive them tomorrow to Port, polish flow balance, and reface the valves. They are going to also alodine them which they say makes them run cooler. Aside from the claimed performance gain I was more concerned of the notorious continental valve Problems. They say thAt they will inspect and correct them with the refacing. Good insurance at $300 a cylinder in my opinion.

since you are turbocharged I would Imagine you would get more benefit from the port and polish than me.

After the first time I did it and it took probably an hour to get the dang safety wire in I bought a curved hemostat before doing it again. The only reason I own them is to put the safety wire down through the hole in the oil pan when doing the oil screen. It makes the job much easier.
