From what i have read i think it is the GE 4509 does that sound right?

Mooneys are listed on page 7 of 12 pages worth of approved aircraft:

NOTE #1:  Installation is limited to previously approved landing/taxi light lamp size and location.

Not sure about the '66 M20E, but my '70 M20G uses the GE 4522 bulb (13V, 250 watts). Its rated life is about 25 hours. I do a lot of night flying, so I've thought about getting an LED light installed, but haven't yet.

I replaced both my landing lights with the Whelen Parmethius LED lights for about $210 each.  I got the first at Sun N Fun and the second at OSH.  They work great, never fail, use almost no power, create little heat, and I leave them on the entire flight as additional recognition lights.  This is a no brainer.

It is also easy enough to figure out which bulb.  Just take out your current bulb and look at the back.  It is only 3 screws.  Putting in the LED has one secret.  They have to go in a certain way.  If the wires are backwards, it won't work and your current bulb may not be wired correctly since it isn't sensitive to the reverse polarity.  Try it before you finish installing the LED to be sure it goes on with the switch.  Otherwise you need to reverse the wires.  No big deal and then you never have to do it again.

A little off topic but last night I realized my landing light is out and I hope to make a night flight this evening.  To my surprise Napa has a replacement bulb for my M20B in stock.  Same part number but listed for a Sport Aircraft on the Napa label.  It was about $5 more than what Chief sells it for so not a great deal but good to know I can get one on short notice.

Mark, what type bulb are you using? mine is a GE but not sure which model it is.Also I noticed today that there are a few phillips head screws around the perimeter of the landing light.Is that what I need to do to take out the existing light?or how do you remove the light?

My plane is a M20B which uses a 100W bulb.  I believe yours uses a 250W.  However to answer your question, my bulb is a GE 4537.  Yes, you just remove the screws and the lamp pulls out.  Check your aim before putting the screws back in.

Guys, I just installed my Whelen PAR 46 LED light.  It is fantastic and it is easy to install on my '75 Mooney F Executive.  Don't even consider getting a regular bulb that only lasts 25 hours.  No STC, no 337, just remove and replace.  It took about 20 minutes.  Just be sure connect the lead wire to the correct fitting (it does make a difference on connecting to the bulb, I just had to sway connectors).  Even for $225 (I bought it at OshKosh) it is worth it, plus it looks cool as well.  By the way, I replaced all my position lights with LED as well, now I a have a "Green" Mooney!!!

Butch, do you know if the whelen PAR46 that you put in your m20F will also work for a m20e? I am not sure if they are the same but would like to know. 225 seems to be a better price than what I have been able to find.Thanks

I don't know for sure if the PAR 46 will work on an E model Mooney, but I would be willing to bet it would.  Measure the diameter of your landing light and then call Whelen.  The light sits in a riveted bracket, the only way to replace the bulb is to remove the front bracket.  It only has 4 small screws, even I could do it.  Definitely worth the effort.

A pretty good google search led me to a VAF forum where they debated back and forth the legality of these LED bulbs.  One peroson talked to the owner of the manufacturer, where he listed a lot of specs that the bulb supposedly conforms to regarding incandescent bulbs, but no hard data that says "yes this is a legal replacement for the bulb". 

A lot of "legality" is being able to defend your positon.  I dont see a defense here.

the first thread is the one I was referring to.  Its 9 pages about LED lamps, so its a similar issue as the STATE TAXES Aircraft thread.
