carusoam Posted April 6, 2023 Report Posted April 6, 2023 Typical Long Body lighting package may need… the Ultras have different wing tip light requirements… 1) Landing light 1 2) Landing light 2 3) Taxi light 1 4) Taxi light 2 5) Recog light 1 6) Recog light 2 7) L Nav light (with strobe) 8) R Nav light (with strobe) 9) Tail light rudder (strobe) 10) Tail light wingtip 1 11) Tail light wingtip 2 12) Belly strobe 13) Ice light… probably not an LED application Did I miss any…? PP dreaming out loud… Best regards, -a-

Made me think harder… reminded me of another external light… Similarly, we have an ice light for the Fiki systems…. Probably, LEDs are too cold for that application… Best regards, -a-
OSUAV8TER Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 I am receiving the 28V LED recognition lights tomorrow so I am going to start shipping them as quickly as I can. Once pre-orders are complete I will have inventory for future orders. Scottknoll Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 Anyone have any feedback on the install process yet? We just received ours as well. There doesn’t seem to be much attached to the bulb mounting wise. Just a small black housing on the back with two wires coming out.
Fly Boomer Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 Has anyone installed these yet? What happens after removing these two screws holding the lens top and bottom (and after I replace the screws and Tinnerman washers)?

If you remove the screws, the lens should slide off of the wingtip exposing the strobes. The back of the incandescent light has a rectangular spring clip that you have to work out so you can slide the light out through the front. Cut the wires, splice in the new light, and reinstall and put the clip back onto the back of the new light. - make sure you run the wires THROUGH the spring clip! 2 1
Airways Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 So no need to remove the strobes in order to get the recog light out ? Just the lens cover ?
ArtVandelay Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 So no need to remove the strobes in order to get the recog light out ? Just the lens cover ?Correct, but the LEDs are polarized, so you will need to identify the positive wire.
Brian Tesar Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 Tom, The spec sheet shows the LEDs as non-polarized and there are no markings on the wires to differentiate.
OSUAV8TER Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 They are non-polarity sensitive and it matters how they are oriented. In the photo I provided, that is the correct way.

ArtVandelay Posted April 21, 2023 Report Posted April 21, 2023 the photo cuts through the middle of your sentence! *NOT* polarity sensitive They must have some added circuitry to that, but I’m surprised why they didn’t add voltage regulator as well so they can handle 14v or 28v with same model, pretty easy to do?
OSUAV8TER Posted April 21, 2023 Report Posted April 21, 2023 Just now, ArtVandelay said: They must have some added circuitry to that, but I’m surprised why they didn’t add voltage regulator as well so they can handle 14v or 28v with same model, pretty easy to do? They tried to do that but the resistor in the 28V airplanes caused the change to do two separate models.

I know someone who put in some low-cost LEDs. Turns out they had some kind of buck/boost circuitry to accommodate a range of voltages and they drove his radios crazy.

FlyingScot Posted April 21, 2023 Report Posted April 21, 2023 Put mine in today - they look and work great - and no melted spot! 1
Brian Tesar Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 Installed ours yesterday. They work great. We had them on for 5 minutes in the hangar and they produce no noticeable heat on the lens. 3
ArtVandelay Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 Now you need to replace the incandescent strobe/position lights with LEDs.
OSUAV8TER Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 @FlyingScot and @Brian Tesar when you are ready to upgrade to the Orion 650E, I have them too! They look really nice. I'm glad this will help permanently remedy this problem. https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/WAT-28V-Green-6502GE-Wingtip-Light_p_170.html https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/WAT-28V-Red-6502RE-Wingtip-Light_p_169.html 1

OSUAV8TER Posted April 27, 2023 Report Posted April 27, 2023 I just got emailed this photo of this lens... I haven't seen one this bad before! For the record this is not just a Mooney unique problem. My buddy who flies a T-6 told me that with the big old PAR-56 incandescent lamps they have a published limitation that it can only be ran on the ground for several seconds before it melts the lens. Getting it into the air to help it cool is critical. LEDs are amazing! 1
