I was on my way out to work today and noticed a Mooney flying overhead. They had their landing gear down. I looked up the plane on FlightAware. Curious why they were flying this way.

Please solve the mystery. Ferry flight?

Speaking from experience, if your climb and speed are suddenly in the toilet, you might want to double check your gear position.  Adopting a check at the top of a climb (and 1000 agl) also helps find this problem.

On the other hand, N22NS may have had other good reasons for flying with the gear down.  Maybe the alternator was in-op?  Or maybe they were reminiscing about flying a M20D?

“Gear up, flaps up, engine instruments green.” If I said that leaving the departure end of the runway I got a smile from my CFI. If I didn’t he had various ways to express his disapproval...

Cruising at 114kts...

I suspect he not only new they were down, but was doing so on purpose...

Often there is a discussion about the gear operations... and ferrying to a maintenance shop...

Best regards,

...and flap position.  Been there and done that.

Very easy to leave flaps in the takeoff position, particularly if momentarily distracted and not notice it until the accidental overspeed when levelling off soon after takeoff.

After takeoff checklist (read from the IFD440): 'Gear up, Flaps 0, Boost pump off.'

Works for me.
