My Taxi Light stopped working and seems to have a marginal contact in the Positronic connector in the circuit breaker box.  I found the attached service bulletin describing the issue.  Has anyone installed this kit on their planes and was was the failure mode?  I measure 24 volts at the Taxi light switch and it drops to .1 volts as soon as the switch is turned on.

I did the M20-286 SB to fix my Taxi light.  It was not cheap :(

I recommend that you review the SB and if your plane is listed, install LED's ASAP and save money ---

The kit ( just wires and connectors) alone is $300.00 then add in the labor and down time ++++.

I saw the taxi light above on a Cessna.  It looked brighter than my GE 4596 which is 250W.  In reality, it is rated lower than the GE (150K candle power) but seems brighter--  Don't know if it is due to color, angle or what?

It is the color , but regardless of the candlepower , they work better and use almost no current , I sell the same ones Lance sells for 60 each.....I have had no complaints.....

Mooneys have two sizes of landing and taxi lights.

1) Wing mounted are PAR36

2) Cowl mounted are usually PAR46

PAR sizes are inches and parts of an inch.  A PAR 36 is three inches and some parts in diameter. PAR 46 is four and some parts inches in diameter...

Back in the day, this was somehow a helpful system to size an object.

Par36 are 4.5 inches...so for that to be right, 36 would need to be 3 in + 6*1/4 in.

Update...

two sizes...

Big: Par 46...  5.35" (nominal 5 1/2")

Small: Par 36...   4.38" (nominal 4 1/2")

PAR has become synonymous with 'style' they have left the word size hidden somewhere...

last page of this doc has the sizes....

Thanks to TJ for describing the relic standard.  I completely forgot how that worked...:)

I'm on the road away from 79H.  Can someone confirm this will work on a 79-J?

I have one on my 77 J. I assume yours is the same. I must say that it is marginal at best. I would never go back with the incandescent, but have given strong consideration to the Sunspot. It's price just needs to come down by half b/c I'm a CB.

Any updates on folks using the LED's ? Night flight tonight and both of my landing lights are out. Not sure of the last time I confirmed both were working so it is possible they have burnt out. Glad to still have two taxi lights for the landing.

I recall that PAR sizing is in 1/8" increments.

I installed the PAR 36 lights, a taxi and a landing version, in my K. (Purchased from Lance on Ebay). It gotta say they work GREAT. I don't see any movement on the volts or amp meter turning them on and they are super bright. Just make sure you get the polarity right. Incandescent bulbs don't care, but the LED's do. I guessed on mine and got one of them right. It was a simple fix to switch the wires on the other one and both work great.

Better check the switch first....

I have a bad feeling it is not two lights going out in the same time frame. My switch is a split switch so maybe not the switch itself but could be the incoming power to or within the switch. I had been meaning to make the jump to LED's and my delay may have cost me extra trouble.

From another flying forum, CSOB lights. Several selections of beam patterns.

Just a point about troubleshooting this if you happened to have the same problem as I had:

If you measure the voltage at the switch it may show 24 volts with no current indicating that the right voltage is making it to the switch.  I also measured 24 volts at the Taxi light switch but it dropped to .1 volt as soon as the switch was turned on.  If the voltage does not drop significantly after the switch is turned on, you may have a different problem.
