That's the practice area for the South Bay airports (LGB, TOA)...it's very crowded airspace and this is not the first mid-air to occur there.  IRIP.

Flying in congested airspace in the SF Bay area, I am glad I got ADS-B out (GDL-88) with the display on my GTN650 as soon as I had the opportunity. I can't count how many near hits I have had, some on IFR flight plans. It's amazing how much traffic you don't see even when pointed out to by ATC. I wonder if any of these planes were equipped with ADS-B.

I installed a GDL 88 when the unit was first approved, over 3 years ago. The TIS displayed on the GTN 750 is a beautiful thing. I did a (B)FR this week. I knew I would not be using the autopilot or GPS info so I set the 750 to the dedicated traffic page before take off. While doing air work, pattern flying, emergencies etc. it was great to have those electronic eyes watching for planes. We're not a very busy area which has its own challenges including complacency. 

I would think all instructors regularly doing air work in defined practice areas will be grateful when most of the GA fleet is 2020 compliant.

Ditto - just yesterday I got two close traffic alerts in the Washington DC area (outside SFRA)  Each passed within about 200 yards and +100'   I probably would not have seen them without the alerts via ADS-B (GDL88).   It gets your attention when the stern voice intones "TRAFFIC" in your headset and the yellow blob heads your way on the G500 screen.

Every FIRC I have attended has reminded us that most midair collisions occur in CAVU conditions.

You can never be careful enough.

The traffic has always been there, you just never saw it or collided with it.

The GDL-88 is a real game changer - and eye opener (pun intended).

Flew this morning from San Carlos to Watsonville and back. Lots of Super Bowl traffic. I dedicate my GTN 650 for traffic, at the six mile range, while the GTN 750 displays traffic for the full range of display. Thanks to FlightStream 210 I also get TIS-B traffic on my yoke mounted Mini4 running ForeFlight. I had aircraft passing over and under me near San Jose, and I doubt if I would have spotted them without the TIS-B as a pointer. Got Alerts several times, but I had already been tracking the ones I thought dangerous.

I've had a few close encounters over the years and only one real near mid air. Nothing like looking at twin headed for you head on to appreciate what potential TIS-B offers for us.

My closest call came approaching the Verrazano Bridge in 1983. We were so close I could see the guy had a mustache.

I have been surprised how much Nancy pays attention to the traffic display. After 45 years flying right seat, the only task she's been willing to take on is inputting xponder code and now zooming in on traffic. She's obsessed with someone running into us.
