'Same as' is going to be too strong of a descriptor...

If you want a J, buy a J.

If you want an F that goes fast, get one modified up to modern J standards...

The nice thing about the later Js, they came complete from the factory.

Modified planes have the challenge of who did the mod, how well was it done.  That kind of thing.

What's your plan?

If you don't send a link, there will be people that aren't that interested in helping you out.

It would take me at least five minutes to find Barnstormers and get to the tail number.

Barnstormers is where the projects tend to go.

Are you looking for a project?

Best regards,

If someone is interested in this plane, I am based at Placerville, and can take a look if you want. Its parked on the ramp. Let me know what you're specifically curious about.  Send me a PM.

That is a nicely modified F with a cowl closure. It has a sloped windshield.

Some people have really updated Fs to be clones of early Js.

With all the modifications, a Pre Purchase Inspection will be good to have.

The last line of the ad comes across like a guarantee....

"At 12,000 feet, running 19" and 2350 RPM, burning 7.7 GPH, this plane will return 155 Kts."

If you want to see the difference, this J was listed around here recently...

It's an F with 201-windshield and cowl closure. I have both on my C.

BUT this one does not have any kind of sunvisors, nor GPS. The first makes it unattractive to me [I use my visors flying towards the sun a lot], and the second reduces the price. Cosmetics appear good.

One thing to remember:  no matter how much you spend, no matter how many mods you do, an F will always be an F, it will never become a J. It should be priced as a modded F.

In any event, regardless of model or modifications, get a good Pre Purchase Inspection from someone who is familiar with the quirks of Mooneys.

Happy shopping!

Hank -- they make this new dangled thing called sunglasses. Heard they work great.

As for a mod rich F, if it is a done right, an F will run with an early J.

Here is a photo of my "F" doing 157 KTAS. I was running full throttle, 2550 RPM. A well done F can and will be an economical buy.

Wait a minute...

Wasn't the guaranty statement a bit less...?

Something is funny with that advertisement.

Advertised plane:  19", 7.7gph = 155 kts.

Well known plane (gives SP's J a run for his money): FT@ 4.5k', 11.5 gph = 157 kts.

Are we discussing mph for one and kts TAS for the other?

Makes me want to by one of those really super efficient J looking Ks? :)

Best regards,

There is no way the advertised plane is doing 155KTAS on 7.7 GPH and with those power settings. Either the units are wrong or it is being misrepresented. I think you are right. If it were 155 MPH, that would translate to 134 KTAS. And I could buy leaning aggressively to get somewhere near there.

I have owned my plane for a lot of years. I flight plan 150 KTAS at 10 GPH (although I normally am at 9.8 GPH) for normal power settings and at an 8,000 to 9,000 altitude.

For trips at a lower altitude, like the one I made with Jack, I can increase the power up a bit, burn a little more and get there a few minutes quicker.

I bought my Mooney to get from point A to B quickly. If I wanted to get there more economically, I'd be in a Cessna 172 or a Cherokee.

I haven't flown with a Cherokee much (but I have walked away from a Cherokee 6). My C is both faster and more fuel efficient than a 172. Yes, the hourly fuel burn is higher, but so is the speed resulting in less fuel used for the same trip.

You beat me to it, Hank!

The best year for Fs is clearly the year that a pair of Aspens and a GTN got bolted in place...

The flush rivets and square windows were pretty cool in the mid 60’s. :)

Man, do you make you a great setup guy or what?! I have flown in Jack M's '67 F model a few times doing Pilots N Paws flights. Any of the Fs have good things going for them.

But as you know, I'm partial to mine.

Don't forget to subtract the 2 knots from the IAS to get CAS. The aspen doesn't know that.

but still a mighty fast F model.  No non-turbo Mooney can do 155 KTAS on 7.5 GPH.

remember, he's doing 157 carrying 1500 lbs of girlfriends, too.  And before you guys get jealous, that's only 2 girlfriends.

Yes indeed, it was challenging to keep the wings level. Thank goodness for autopilots!
