MooneyBob Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 I finally got dynamically balanced my propeller today. It's 3 blade McCauley. I don't think it was bad before and I asked people flying with me if they think the vibration is too bad just to get a second opinion. No one ever complained. But I was curious if it will make any difference. According to the propeller guy we went from .56 inch/s to 0.04 inch/s. We aimed for 2400 rpm. Can I tell it made a huge difference? Not really sure. I think it is smoother but I don't really know what is smooth anymore. What is your experience after you have your propeller balanced. Thanks.

I was reading somewhere that the average prop/crankshaft vibration levels of a non dynamically balanced system is around 0.4 in/s. You got a great improvement! The difference may be very difficult to discern but I think the engine/airframe really notices and is thanking you for it! Excess vibration is not good long term for all involved such as engine components, accessories, avionics, exhaust, etc. etc. Mine is optimized at 2450 RPM. After I had the airplane repainted I had it dynamically balanced again. It had changed! 1

kevinw Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 I had mine done about a year ago and found a noticeable difference. It even sounded different when I took off. Perhaps mine was just really bad. In any case I'm a big fan of dynamic prop balancing.
MB65E Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 Mine is .05ips after engine and prop overhaul. No adjustment done during my prop balance. I did take my time with the overhaul and race balance the crank. My buddies Eagle was .77 at idle and over 1.0 during cruise. Yikes. I did learn a bit on what all the other values mean during the balance process. My highest values were the combustion values. My guy said they could be lower if I matched all the Fuel flows and put fine wires in. Not willing to do the fine wires, but I'll take a look at the fuel flows. Great SoCal Guy!!
