Hi guys!

My J is up for the bi-annual avionics check and I am thinking about putting in a backup electrical attitude indicator (14v). My panel has got a useless assigned altitude window that I can use (see photo below). Is it a good place to put it? Also any recommendations on which electrical backup attitude to buy? Also how long does it take to install one in by the shop?

Thanks!

Prefer electrical gyro! Also, what's this tilt thing? 0 or 8-degree?

And how many hours to install one, realistically?

Thanks

This solid-state AI is appealing.

Full-width display, no moving parts, stable within seconds of power-up, won't tumble, only about 2" deep.

Tommy,

I just had one of these installed and it is one of the best things I've done to my panel.

It's as fast and smooth as the vacuum based KI-256 and there aren't any moving parts in it. If you get the optional inclinometer you can replace you turn coordinator with this unit.

I did an IPC 2 weeks ago and the instructor failed both my 530 and the primary AI. Flying an ILS with this backup AI and the "plain old" nav head was a breeze!

I have a Sigma Tek electric AI with inclinometer (SigmaTek 5000EG; PN: 1U670-001-1) that needs to be rebuild. Sigma Tek wants ~ $1,100 to rebuild it. I'll sell it for $600 if you're interested.

Tilt is related to the IP's vertical nature. Some panels have various bends to accommodate different things including viewing angle.

The M20 C is known for having a bend in the middle of it...expect the J to be 0°, but check to be sure...

Best regards,

This post is timely as I've been talking with my partner about a backup AI and I really didn't know what the options were. Luckily we have an open spot on the panel to mount one.

If the Australian airworthiness authorities would allow the Dynon, I would choose it over others. I have a client who uses one as a back up to his G1000.

I stuck a Dynon D1 in the ADF hole. Doesn't have the flush & professional look I like like, but got mine for $1100 & completely independent, it's got a lot of info to hopefully save the day. The D2 may be their new option though. Lot cheaper than any backup ADI plus installation I could find.

I like it! If I buy one I can get 6 data points for straight and level!

Two Aspen, 1 vacuum, 2 iPads and the Dynon!

Now that is what I call REDUNDANCY!

Price aside, anyone have input or opinion on this:

Can we even put it in our Mooneys?

I put one in and it is a very nice unit! I have pulled the CB and the battery backup is better than advertised, the screen is bright and easy to see. I gained 11 lbs of useful load by removing my vacuum system which i did have a 2nd electric vacuum.

On the Aspen you can turn them off.

Is there a second Altitude & Airspeed display? Or just "Off"?

What about Sandia Quatro? I played with it at Oshkosh last year and it seemed like a solid unit for the money, and the battery was built it...

This is my response from the other thread.

I was waiting for this unit but they are way behind on getting it certified. It looks good on paper but the fact it has been in use in the experimental world for a while and it is taking much longer than projected to get certified makes me wonder what the hiccups are. The price point is aggressive compared to the competitors and I was waiting as long as I could until my backup steam guages went out. They finally gave up on me and ended up buying the SAM unit. If the Aspen backup unit becomes available that will be the best bang for the buck!

Hi Pete, I really dislike the SAM. The install is not clean. The way it displays the stuff on two screens is silly. I don't see the value of the unit.

We had it spec'd out for standbys in some helicopters. It's non standard sizing requirements made it difficult to install. The screens felt more "experimental" than some of the certified stuff. We ended up with the L3 Triligoly. Now in the Mooneys I would say the L3 is way overkill. A nice standby would be RCallen's digital 2600 ADI. No airspeed or altitude, but a nice solid ADI. Also I have not checked pricing on any of the L3 stuff in the last 2 years but their prices are coming down and the gee-Wizz factor was going up a while back.
