MooneyBob Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 I am trying to find out what is the best way to spray paint the plastic panels of my 1977 M20J. I found multiple references to the SEM paint but with no specifics. What type ? Color used? Anybody has any experiences with different brand and good results? Could it be regular paint for plastic from Home Depot? Thanks Quote
PTK Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 I used this Bob. http://www.semproducts.com/aerospace-aerospace-refinishing/color-coattm-aerosols It chemically reacts and bonds with ABS surface creating a new surface. Quote
Yetti Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 I used Rustoleum with primer inside.  The one with the fancy spray trigger in a Satin Nickle finish.  I am only a couple weeks into the durability test, but so far I think it will last.  On the larger panels, there was some weird coverage issues out in the sun, but I can't see them when reinstalled.   As with most Rustoleum I let it dry for a good 12 if not 24 hours before handling.  The only time I use Krylon is if I need it dry quick. 1 Quote

TTaylor Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 SEM Super White is what most use on the interior panels. I found it at a local autopaint store. My gallery has images from the rear window mod showing the painted window trim. Quote
Hank Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 I bought my panel spray paint at the local auto paint supply store. Cant remember the brand, but the counter guys will know what to use for plastic. Last done in 2007, still looks decent but as always, a good cleaning helps. 1 Quote

I used the same one five years ago and very happy with it. It cleans very well without paint coming off. José Quote
PTK Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 That's what I am looking at. What finish and color did u use? Thanks.  Bob, I used the SEM complete system in the following order:  http://www.semproducts.com/aerospace-aerospace-prep-products/aerospace-sem-soap   One bottle is more than enough to scrub all of the panels thoroughly with mild scuff pad. http://www.semproducts.com/aerospace-aerospace-prep-products/aerospace-plastic-leather-prep Two cans is plenty for the entire interior. Took a little over a can. http://www.semproducts.com/automotive-flexible-coatings/color-coattm-aerosols I used about 12 cans of color and finished with a couple cans of low luster clear for entire interior.  I used color Sailcloth White. 1 Quote
BobAustin Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 They used SEM 15183 Warm Gray on my 85 M20J...may have been the color selected by the shop when had new leather interior installed. Quote

Am I crazy or what? It looks very dark brown on the SEM web site color chart. Is your interior painted with the White Sailcloth in your gallery pictures? Thanks. Quote

Sometimes when things get scanned in and displayed on monitors look funky. Quote

Av8 Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 I used sailcloth white from SEM, you can see pics on other posts. They sell a plastic prep aerosol, but I found clean cloth/rubbing alcohol to be adequate. Work is recent but coverage and adherence is excellent. I did every piece of interior plastic on 5 cans. 2 Quote
markejackson02 Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 I purchased the SEM products at my local auto paint store and it turned out great. Â Be sure to use the SEM cleaner before the paint. Quote

peevee Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Our panels were repainted some years ago, but now it's flaking off a little, any suggestions for prep? Sand? Soda blast? I need some gentle way to prep the surface without damaging the texture. Quote
jetdriven Posted July 31, 2015 Report Posted July 31, 2015 Red scotchbrite pad and lots of clean soap and water to rinse. Then use the sem surface prep and the color coat. 2 Quote

RLCarter Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 SEM recommends gray scotchbrite, I have used SEM products for 30+ years, great stuff holds up very well, follow the instructions to the T, use the complete system, soap prep paint. You can also get it mixed to use with a paint gun as I did, had an issue with it coming off( oil base toner in water base paint) SEM tech guys mixed me up a new batch and I was back in business ( bad batch was purched over the net, NOT FROM SEM), I used just over a pint of each color(2 tone) for all the plastics and the leather seats. Didn't feel like spending the money for new seats covers just because I didn't like the color. Quote
