I went with the Boeshield even though Corrosion X is the most common name bandied about. I like it because it doesn't leave the inside of the plane a gooey mess. I think it's OK for me. I now live inland away from the coast in a very sunny part of California and my plane is hangared. Guys on tie downs out by the coast probably need the gooey mess.

Doesn't Cessna use it on their new production jets? There were a bunch of service letters about it I think. They spray in in gear wells and such. Dries clear initially then yellows over Time. Awesome stuff from the seminar I listned to at ICT. More of a sealant than a penetrator if I remember.

Cheers,

Matt

FYI-Barnstormers has a M20E airframe for sale for $7800. Looks clean and dry! Great parts airplane if somebody needs a wing! Ailerons and other things would be nice to have. Hope someone here grabs it! Let me know, I'd offer to even go look at it here in So Cal for anyone who is interested.

That may be a great find! DaveL, seriously consider this option. If it is truly corrosion free, (looks like are real easy inspection too me!) that is a great price on a replacement wing and the rest of the parts you can sell off, or scrap. If I were in your position, I would be all over this.

+1! Seriously!

Not sure if the wing transplant would work. Dave's 62 would be a smooth wing, while the 70 E is a bumpy wing.

How about just transplanting engine, prop, avionics, etc, to the 70?

It could be, Clarence.  I know of a 90 J that had a 70 ish F model wing bolted onto it, very little speed difference, but there was purportedly a loss of a knot or 3.

I don't know of any reasons why it wouldn't work, other than he might not have to worry about the flap speed and spar cracking he now has with the older C spar. It certainly would be an option to look into if it were me.

Also factor in that you will more than likely be doing a reseal on the tanks.......7K.....

Not really fair, as his existing corroded spar is about to spout quite a leak anyway, and probably has already.

A call to LASAR, DMax, etc, would answer that. To my knowledge the only difference is the rivets used on the skins. It's really mostly just cosmetic.

Thank you for the link. I have a feeling that, unless I keep finding more corrosion, that plane is much more of a project than mine! It does look like a good deal though, and I'll keep it in mind in case things begin to look worse. It would be a major deal to remove the wing and trailer that thing up here though.

Mine has non-leaky bladders - another reason to try and salvage my wing.

DaveL,

Do you have an update on how things are going on your plane?

Just curious to see how you're doing...

I joined EAA and have been watching sheet metal videos! I'm still disassembling the plane to check for more/worse corrosion, but so far my IA structures guy thinks we should repair it. Mooney says $3k and 3 to 5 weeks for a stub spar assembly.

If you're getting that far into it, keep in mind the stub spar should be pretty simple to duplicate from basic aluminum stock.  Just get the right pieces and drill & rivet as required to match what you have today.  I betcha an RV builder could make one in a weekend for far less than $3k.

hopefully the bladders didn't trap moisture between themselves and the ribs and you have still more corrosion to deal with :)

Two of the best aircraft to me are my Mooney and my RV -7 .... After building experimental's ( no plastics :) there are few parts on a Mooney that are hard to duplicate. Your fix is not difficult.

Good luck and have fun

I hired the local LanceAir guy to move my R last summer...

Of course, the LanceAir is bigger than an R and sports a turbine as well!

If that thing is an EAA related machine, I'm ready to change sides...

Best regards,

It would be a project for sure, but look at it this way- You get to practice removing the wing and see how it is actually attached before actually attacking the real project. I love the fact that you are so far tackling this project. Joining the EAA and expanding your knowledge and demystifying aircraft construction is really admirable. Keep us updated! With photos!

I saw that you contacted Mooney and the cost of the replacement Stub Spar and a new one might be the way to go, but labor times should be considered as well. I really have no idea what I'm talking about here, so take it with a grain of Saltine Cracker, but it looks like maybe changing wings might be easier than the stub spar? Maybe a draw? Again though, what ever you do, we want stories and pictures! :D

It is easier to part out this plane , and start over with another , This plane in todays market can be replaced for 25 to 30 K , it can be parted out for an easy fast 18 K   it will cost 20 K to repair ......   Lets do a little math here ....20 K plus 18 K = 38 K    .......38 K - 25 K = 13 K         It will only cost you 13 K more to do a repair on an old corroded airframe.......  Stop painting a Rosy unrealistic picture for this guy.....  This thread is getting really silly.....
