Louisville's cold and dry air this morning brought the Den Alt way down to close to -3000 feet.  I felt it even in the car driving to work this morning! I wonder how it will do on the plane's engine, prop and wing lift!  WEEEEEEEEEE!!!

The engine will be fine if preheated. Leave the cowl flaps closed if you want to get any heat into the cabin, otherwise you'll freeze your patootie off. And as for lift, well, methinks your Mooney will, for a day at least, be transformed into the most amazing STOL aircraft you've ever flown!

About 3 years ago, I went on a flight when it was 2 degrees F.  I had 15 gallons of fuel and solo from 700 MSL.  That thing lifted up so fast that I wanted to push down.  Pretty cool experience.  I still remember it!  It feels incredible and wrong at the same time.

I did something similar about 6 years ago. Not only make sure you have preheated it well, make sure the oil is really up to temp. I congealed the oil in the cooler climbing at a rate to make a homesick angel proud!

Took off for a little night flying with an instructor since it had been a few weeks without flying.  It was in the 20's and hardly any humidity.  It clinbed like a jet.  Lot's of fun!
