The Whelen Super Parmetheus PAR 46.

I've read about this light as well as AeroLEDS Sunspot 46LX light.  Can anyone compare the two?   Is there much difference besides the price?

I compared the Parmetheus with the Sunspot at Oshkosh using Aeroleds very own display. There's a very noticeable difference with the Sunspot being much brighter. Although they didn't specify which Parmetheus they had I'm guessing it was the original version and not the brighter Super Parmetheus or Plus version.

Dang I was hoping to compare the Plus vs Sunspot. I want to know if it's worth the extra $300

Sorry I can't help you but my inclination, from my experience with my light and seeing the demo, would be a yes.

That reminds me that I owe you a video on my completed LED upgrade setup. I have been getting a lot of comments on them, like "Turn them damn things off! You are blinding me!" I am really impressed with the amount of light they project.

Imagine the brightness all around with those three lights synch'd together.

Is their any decreases in brightness with them all synced together? I had read somewhere that they're not as bright as if they flash individually. Was curious what you thought since you have them all synced together. I have the same lights but none are synced at the moment.

Good ole' Notar Pilot is trying to get me to sync mine. Not sure I want to go through the trouble of hooking them all up.

I doubt the syncing of them will dim them any. I guess it depends how much power they draw together.

I don't think they're any dimmer or brighter synch'd or unsynch'd. I tested them in both configurations and individually the brightness is the same. I made my statement in reference to the added brightness of all three lights all flashing simultaneously as opposed to them flashing individually. My coworkers watched me fly home once and were amazed that they could see my lights all the way until I turned final and descended below some buildings some 20 miles away. Being that they were only seeing the right side of my plane says a lot about their individual brightness.

I also like the idea of unsynch'd like Chris has because I think with so many lights flashing randomly it is more eye catching for other aircraft. I would definitely like to see that from the perspective of another aircraft a few miles away from his. I'm thinking of adding a "synch/unsynch" switch in the cockpit for the lights. :P

Interestingly I do physical training on Hampstead Heath in London which is a large open space but also is under the Heathrow holding pattern/ turning area of what appears to be a plethora of routes.

The point of this is while being shouted at and otherwise bullied by my military PT while doing sit-ups or squats etc I have watched the planes going overhead.  We get Boeings and Airbuses etc.  Some have strobes aome have flashing LEDs.  The LEDs are damn bright but they just flash on and off.  I've noticed that the more obvious ones are the ones that seem to pulse rather than just flash. It is just my opinion but it would be interesting to see what the FAA etc have said on this subject as after all they are anti collision lights which means the more visibility the better.  What catchs your eye more brightness or pulsing strobe like lights?

Andrew, are you referring to the landing lights that pulse or just LED anti collision lights that flash at a faster rate than the on/off flashing of the Whelen product? I believe the Aeroleds products have LEDs that pulsate in quick bursts of three flashes at a time.

In haze or poor weather I keep my LoPresi Boom HID landing light on for the entire flight. The wingtip LED "recognition/landing lights" are set to alternate 2-3 second intervals, and the LED strobes are always on as well. I want to be seen from as far away as possible. My former 161 conversion had two landing lights in the nosvbowl, and two landing/taxi lights in each wing. Plus recognition and strobe lights. Overkill, perhaps, but tower personnel almost always remarked that they could see me a long way off.

Did you say you have wingtip LED recognition lights? Are those the same as the regular incandescent recognition lights found on the newer Mooney's? If so, what do they look like and where did you find them? I am very interested in these for my J.

I've run through this several times now on MS. You can find photos and discussions in the MS archives. These lights, all LEDs, were done via 337 forms. In response to PMs I have sent out about a dozen copies of my 337 forms. Only one person followed up to me, and that person said their local FISDO would not approve a similar installation.

It's an interesting installation Bennett. But I think it's too much work especially when the Orion 650 E drops right in.

What I have been calling "recognition" lights are actually small diameter LSA and Experimental "landing" lights. They are incredibly bright and just by themselves are useful landing lights. Since I have a LoPresti Boom HID landing light in the nose cone, I use a selector switch to alternate these wingtip lights as "recognition" lights, and anyone who has seen me approaching them in flight spots me at appreciable distances. These are far brighter than my LED strobes (or LED navigation lights) which are part of my wingtip installation. In fact the FAA inspector who came out from the FISDO to inspect them himself, said they were a "safety" item. I guess I was lucky, and the mechanics who did the actual installation and paperwork had a very good working relationship with the FISDO. In other aircraft, with other mechanics, I have had to have been persistent (13 months to substitute an alternator for the original generator in my Cessna 140) by proving this substitution made the aircraft safer. I don't give up easily.

I'm noticing that on Toronto fire trucks when they put the brakes on, there's an initial flash from the LEDs and then they are on solid with just a fraction of a second delay.  It certainly catches your eye more than just brake lights coming on.

Pulsing works.  Not sure why Whelen decided to have a relatively long "on" rather than a couple of pulses with perhaps a cooling delay for a second.  Is there a technical reason that LEDs couldn't ?

Is the rear easy to swap?  My wife got me the Orion 600's for Christmas.  Thinking about replacing the rear, too.

Hey! Christmas isn't for a month! Why'd Michelle cave in and give them to you so early???

She asked me to help her find something, and I ran across them. She was pretty upset. Lol.

I was wondering how she knew what to get, and she  told me you helped her pick them.

B)

I want to see them once you're all done. I think the little tail light, just like the landing light, is a simple swap. Let me know how involved the Nav light install is.

More like a bunch of idiots spending $1500 on light bulbs. I blame my lighting addiction on NotarPilot.
