When tempest had their center electrode welding outsourced several years ago several people found them missing.   I am guessing they don't outsource anything.   I have always used Tempest Filters.   The work as advertised.

Of all the parts suppliers, Tempest is one of the best. Let them work through these current issues.  Your other choice is Champion, who has done a lot of damage to the industry by denying their spark plugs were crap for six years, before quietly changing the design to mirror the Tempest plugs. And producing crap magnetos and replacement parts. Be thoughtful of the big picture before you trash them over an additional feature that they can't provide at this time.

Tempest is not the first nor last if they decide to not pass the savings to the customer. Look at unleaded fuel when it came out was actually a step less to NOT put lead into the fuel and yet was priced higher than leaded fuel because it was “new” and marketing could get away with it. It would be nice to see a price drop but i wouldn’t hold my breath for it.

Lead was an inexpensive way to boost octane. Refineries claimed that MTBE, the lead replacement, was a much more costly chemical to boost octane . My brother owned an Amoco gas station during the lead phase-out and at least that's what the petroleum industry claimed. Other than ethanol I'm not sure what they use now to boost octane.

back to the Tempest/Champion debate. I like Tempest and my IA seems to like Champion. He rolls his eyes when he sees a Tempest. Still trying to win him over. I think he had one of the newer ones with the new gasket that had been way overtightened and had a problem getting it off, but that was the installer, not the filter.

Same situation here, save for my IA's reaction.  Get the taller Tempest (AA48109) filters.  12+ years in Ovations and never an issue.

Back in the 20s when fuel research was happening in earnest. They were trying everything imaginable to boost octane. It turns out that TEL was the hands down leader. Nothing even comes close to its performance. The fact that it was a simple molecule made with inexpensive components, was just a bonus.

benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and ethanol are the current octane boosters. The benzene content was limited by the EPA to 0.62% in 2007.

Auto fuels typically contain about 18% BTEX. that is the stuff that makes car gas smell so awful.

Would love to use the 109 filter but my cowl door bar would hit it on my 252 in the fully closed position, damn the bad luck. I have to stay with the 108.
