funvee Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Hey everyone... This is likely a dumb question but i would rather be safe than sorry... In a m20f 1967, is my electrical 14v or 28v? I was going to put an offer on: Model # GNC 300XL Part # 011-00433-00 Serial # 95102169 14 VDC but then I got to questioning myself about the 14v part.... I can't find where it tells me and I still don't have the plane in front of me yet. Thanks, Shawn Quote
1964-M20E Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 If I'm not mistaken the system is 14V the 67F model. This is something you should really know since it may be necessary one day to get your plane started. I'm not sure when 24V came out but I belive it was in the mid to late 70's. The 300XL is a nice unit I had it in my 64E model and it was IFR cert. iwht an OBS. Quote
MARZ Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 14Volt - you may want to get an overall idea on your avionics - I put a kln 90 in and the next year I was pulling it out and putting in a 430... Quote
Hank Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Some people do strange things to their airplanes. Easy way to tell: 24V requires two batteries. The odds are very high that you only have one, and are therefore 12V like the rest of the vintage planes. Quote
John Pleisse Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 All Mooenys are 14v until 1983. Garmin makes coverters for their GNS and GXL units. They are cumbersome and heavy, have greater install issues and are throwing good money after bad. Quote
funvee Posted September 27, 2012 Author Report Posted September 27, 2012 Thanks everyone. I never even thought about the 1 battery vs 2 Definitely 14v in it. Quote
OR75 Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 you may want to look at your POH which would describe the equipments you have on your aircraft. if you don't have a POH .... big bro may want to talk to you one of these days ! Quote
Lionudakis Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 There are 24 volt aircraft batteries that don't require 2 batteries. Quote
stevesm20b Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 24V systems don't require two batterys, just one 24V battery. Quote
FlyTester Posted September 30, 2012 Report Posted September 30, 2012 The 300XL is a nice unit I had it in my 64E model and it was IFR cert. iwht an OBS. The airplane I just bought has a full GNC 300XL IFR installation (with a 250XL below). From looking at the manual, it seems like an backwards, uphill learning curve from the 430...but at least it's mine! Any tricks to using it? Do you have the 12v converter for pulling it out of the rack and practicing with it in SIM mode? Quote
eaglebkh Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 I have this unit also - it's pretty nice if you don't mind the first generation interface/software. Just don't accidentally scroll to the NAV map page... Takes forever to load and to adjust the range. Quote
funvee Posted October 11, 2012 Author Report Posted October 11, 2012 Ok, so now that the website is working for me now... Here is the update. I bought the plane and a 300xl and it is installed. I used it for my flight back from Oregon to Manitoba and it was flawless. Now for my next stupid question.... How the heck do you update the database on the removable card? Who do I buy it from ? I thought it would come from Garmin or Jepp but I can't find a reference to the 300xl on their sites. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shawn Quote

Thanks, Shawn http://jeppdirect.jeppesen.com/legal/charts/ads-overview.jsp?ostc=ostc00185wh&omnostcloc=lr1 I believe you will need to get some kind of reader to link it to your computer, also. Just look around the site, and you should find what you need. 1 Quote
funvee Posted October 11, 2012 Author Report Posted October 11, 2012 http://jeppdirect.je...&omnostcloc=lr1 Fabulous!! That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! Quote
1964-M20E Posted October 11, 2012 Report Posted October 11, 2012 Being I no longer have a 300XL I can sell you an extra card and the reader $175 it plugs into a USB port. I'll even update the database from my subscrition which is still acitve at least for a little while you will be up to date. You need to go on Jeppsen's site and set up an account and buy a subscription. Be preapred is is a pain in the a$$ to set up an account or at leaset that is what I found. It is easy then to update the card and next time you go to the plane you just swap the carda and the database is now up to date. Quote

Also, getting a recent update would be nice b/c Jeppesen doesn't give much of a discount for single time updates vs. a whole year. Quote
funvee Posted October 11, 2012 Author Report Posted October 11, 2012 Do you know if there is anyone other than Jepp that provides nav database for the 300xl? Quote
rbridges Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Do you know if there is anyone other than Jepp that provides nav database for the 300xl? nope. they've got us bent over on this one. Quote
DrBill Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Jepp is the only one for the Garmin units. I'm tied to them too for the 430. Good service tho. I have a spare card and do the swap when I go to the airport. I keep it in the USB reader. Bill Quote
funvee Posted October 12, 2012 Author Report Posted October 12, 2012 I guess if Jepp is the only show in town, I might as well do the subscription instead of the one time buy. Bummer that there isn't a competitor. Thanks! Shawn Quote
