What do you consider the greatest Mooney of all time? Not just the newest or most expensive, but the most innovative, influential, aesthetic, appealing, and most ahead of its time?

77 M20J isn't even on the list.   The 78 was a step backwards.

It’s probably not fair to put the 89 J on the list either, since the 89 J model is clearly the one against which all other Mooneys are judged

My favourite is the MSE.

But in terms of the most innovative, influential, aesthetic, appealing and most ahead of its time, IMHO is the first J.

I might be a little biased (currently owning a "K") but would vote for the Encore - best bang for the buck, performance and efficiency. The cost to buy-in is the only reason I can't vote for the Acclaim.

Technically the first time was the 252.

But the real best is a 252 converted to Encore specs.  Gain 230 gross weight with a lighter empty weight.

On another note, the M20B was the first all metal Mooney, and the newest Mooneys still use the same wing, but it didn’t make the list.

In general it’s the Mooney Fleet, depending on your mission, financial situation and so on. I’ve owned 2 J models, a great Bravo and an Acclaim and during my ownership of each I felt they were the best certified piston planes available. Each has an argument for being number one. Like Don mentioned the one you have is the one you love.

The PFM was way ahead of it's time.  It could of evolved into a great plane with a turbo.  The interiors were awesome, Introduced the long body.  No mixture to worry about.  Missile of course led to the Ovation.  Everything the J is AND MORE.  I love them all.(Mooney's)
