Just returned home from Weep-No-More in Minnesota and was laughing about getting more MPG than my wife's Tacoma. The 376NM trip I averaged 19.1mpg (that's including run up and climb to 11,500). Pretty impressive and helps me from wanting to upgrade to a twin!

True, but she only drives 6 City miles to work. I bet it "could" get better MPG, but I've never seen it! Her new ride is a Scooter that gets 100mpg. It was cheaper for her to get her motorcycle license and buy a scooter than put miles on her 22' TRD. I didn't argue.

Is this based on nautical or statute miles? Does it take into consideration the difference between the direct mileage typically flown vs the highway mileage for the same trip? It would seem that the Mooney excel even more.

My F450 gets 11 MPG, makes the 18 in my C downright economical. The F450 has a slightly higher useful load though.

My '19 Tacoma was a 21.X mpg machine, replacing my '04 Ranger that was 20.X mpg around town and 19.X on the highway.

But i really didn't fit the cabin--hit my head on the doorframe, could get my arms or legs comfortable but never both, etc. I replaced it with a '21 Ridgeline, and it consistently gets 24.X, up to 26.X on long trips, and we are both more comfortable. Plus higher payload, too.

My C is usually in the high teens.

That was purely statute miles flown (because my old plane is in MPH) and gallons burned through the totalizer. The EI engine Instruments have a plethora of gee-wiz information when it come to fuel calculations. If I would've had a push the whole way, it would've hit the mid 20mpgs.

We cross shopped the Ridgeline but our local Toyota dealer offered a lifetime warranty on our truck and my 22' Corolla Hatch 6-speed. Ironically, the Honda dealership on the end of our runway just started offering a Lifetime warranty on their new vehicles too. Now I just have to keep my wife from spending all my Mooney money on TRD accessories...

You are an efficient driver! When you get better mileage in town than on the highway, you are doing it right.

That is sweet! I do think an Encore with TKS FIKI is probably the absolute peak of GA efficiency and capabilities. I'd never have to get on another domestic airliner again!

@Pinecone impressive range.  I assume that was powered back and LOP?

130 KIAS is, I think, a very favorable spot on the L/D curve of the Mooney wing.  I find very little degradation in cruise climb going from 120-130 indicated.

Nah, it was just geared very low. And I don't do any city driving--my commute was 15 miles, one 4-way stop sign, one left turn and 3 traffic lights. That truck peaked at about 50 mph, but I don't drive that slow!

Please consider your wife’s well being regarding daily travel on a 2 wheeled vehicle vs a fully enclosed 4 wheeled vehicle with numerous safety features including seat restraints, an air bag system, anti lock brakes, etc……. none of which exist with the scooter. 

Also, some say most vehicle crashes happen within 25 miles of home.  Maybe ask her to stay out of that area :lol:

Only time I have ever seen that is with a true hybrid, a Prius will get better in town than highway.

If efficiency is the goal, go high if the distance is great enough and or slow down. In my J about 120 kts indicated seems to be the sweet spot and at 120 kts it burns 6 GPH, so that’s 20 NMPG or 23 Statute miles per gallon.

Then add in depending on route that you can fly straight lines where a car cannot drive straight lines, I don’t know but I’d guess average may be 25% of average car driving is wasted on curves, different roads etc. If true that’s another 6 MPG, so a J at 120 KIAS is getting 29 car MPG, which is nothing stellar. But time is worth something and it seems on average that an airplane is at least three times faster, and if the airplane is kept at your house then that really saves time for half the trip. 

But if your after efficiency nothing even comes close to an EV.

For the guy who’s Wife is scootering, consider buying her one of those vests highway workers wear, and a VERY good full face helmet, a Shoei or Aria. I threw it away but I fell at Talledega and the whole front of the face shield got ground up, if it hadn’t been a full face helmet, that would have been my face. At least don’t buy a helmet that’s not Snell certified, Snell is much tougher than DOT, Most racing you can only wear a Snell certified helmet.

On my Pig, (KLR-650) I have it’s headlight flashing and brake lights too and added additional tail / brake lights to the metal baggage boxes, and red/white reflective trailer tape to their sides. I stopped short of putting a yellow rotating beacon on top of my helmet. But honestly the more visible you can be, the better. There is goodness to looking like a mobile carnival ride.

I get 23.8 with my F150 in town, it only gets 22.5 on the highway. It makes sense, the wind resistance goes up on the freeway. You should get better mileage going slower. I have been practicing high mileage driving for 20 years. It helps a lot. 

If I want to be zoomy, I get the FJR1300 out. Other than that, the truck is only for getting me from point a to point B as cheaply as possible, not for entertainment.

That’s real nice and definitely better than my F will do up high!

Was 9.1gph just barely ROP?  It seems like when I’m up that high I’m around 10.1 gph ROP or 8.8at peak.  Just curious?  Your E was light, so that definitely helps, but 150kts TAS at 11,500’ and 13deg oat is awesome!

Yep she wears full gear, gloves, full face helmet but honestly only rides it occasionally. She's in the medical field and works crazy long hours. Planning her 6 mile ride to work involves a full pre-flight forecast so she knows what weather to expect in 14hrs! I still worry though, soooooo many idiots can't put down their damn phones. Texting and driving has become the new DUI and EVERYONE is doing it.

I was actually running right at peak EGT (it shows 6 degrees ROP)  That's 63% power but I could have bump the prop up to 2700rpm and made about 70-72%. I can save maybe .5gal going LOP but it doesn't like it (I don't have gami injectors). If I go 100 degrees ROP, I'll gain 2-3mph and burn 10.1gph.

Ahh, that makes sense.  I didn’t see the 2600rpm.  I’m usually at peak or slightly lop with 2500rpm and that’s how I had the slightly lower ff in mind.  I’ll have to try 2600 sometime but my airplane is real smooth at 2500 so I usually just stick there.

Medical field?  Possibly she has witnessed some 2 wheeled tragedies within her medical surroundings!

If she rides occasionally, that certainly narrows the odds in her favor, but it’s the one you don’t see coming that will cause the devastation!  Is it worth saving a few dollars vs keeping her as safe as possible within the 4 wheeled vehicle?

Me…….50 + years of 2 wheeling all 4 corners of US and lots of points in between. I was extremely fortunate to have never crashed .  Many close calls by those who didn’t see me! Lucky I was.

Distracted drivers are a huge factor in me giving it all up! Great memories and great fun it was though!

Have some great adventures in your beautiful Mooney!!:)

Our son lying in ICU after being run over by a hit and run driver and left for dead. He was riding a bicycle but scooter, bicycle similar protection or lack of.

He had a traumatic brain injury, it was touch and go for awhile, first to see if he would survive, then whether he would regain and knowledge of self consciousness or not.

After a couple of months in the Shephards center we were told he wouldn’t and he would need full time care for as long as he survived, one day he sort of woke up, you could tell he was looking back at you but couldn’t talk etc. He had to learn to talk, feed himself, dress, walk etc all over. He has very little short term memory but lives alone and works now.

The casts are from “serial casting” that is once in a vegetative state for an extended period you body draws up and they pull the arms and legs out as much as possible and put on a cast, then a week later they cut the cast off and straighten the limb more.

If he hadn’t been both so young and in such good physical condition he wouldn’t have made it I’m sure

Be careful on two wheels, I know I have ridden and raced most of my life, but your awful vulnerable to the 5,0000 lb OldsMoBuick with the idiot driving.

She doesn't really ride it to save money. She has always wanted her motorcycle license and a scooter/motorcycle. I can't really stop her from the hobby. She certainly has had many patients that were in bad bike accidents. I'm glad she has something she enjoys but I told her I won't be getting a motorcycle anytime soon.

I try to tell people that want to learn to ride, get a dirt bike. They can be lots of fun and while running into a tree does hurt, at least the things don’t try to actively run you over. Another thing I believe dirt bikes teach you as stupid as this sounds but they teach you how to fall, try riding in deep sand. It takes a lot of speed to stay on top of the sand, and I promise you will fall a lot, but it’s a lot of fun.

Steve Mcqueen is on my bike a 73 Husqvarna WR-250, if it’s shocks are laid down and the head radial finned, it’s a 74. I can’t tell.
