Question on using GNS 430w

Can someone tell me how to see ETA or ETE to DESTINATION on a multiple leg fight plan on the GNS 430. All obvious info is shown for the current leg only, (next waypoint), not the destination airport. I have scoured the user manuals and quick guides and can't find the answer. Feeling pretty stupid with this. Thanks

It's been a while, if I remember correctly, you go to flight plan, and scroll through the way points

Yes flt plan page. Push fpl, i have ete and eta set as my data fields.  If you push menu there, you might have other data fields as options.  Push fpl again to exit.  
 

If ete/eta isn’t on the flight plan page, push menu on that page and select your desired data fields for display.

This is me giving advice based on using mine, I didn’t look it up, so I’m not saying other data fields are definitely available on fpl page but they might be.

Yeah, but "you can change the data fields being displayed" is almost universal.  

But that might still not solve your issue. The number of fields that can be displayed is limited so you lose something else. And I don't recall whether Distance to destination is direct distance from where you are or the cumulative distance of the legs. I think the easiest quick check for a direct distance is the same as the quick answer to "what's your in course heading to the destination?" Scroll to the waypoint and hit the Direct key.

That brings me to another question. (Different thread?) When I got back into GA I figured out that I needed either foreflight or Garmin on an I-pad. So by a friends suggestion I picked up a Mini I-pad and put Garmin Pro on it. So I can get everything to work just fine sitting with an internet connection, but once in the airplane it won't update or track or anything. I've looked thru all the settings on the Ipad and the garmin app and still no luck. I know I'm old but geez! Any suggestions? Again, many thanks all around.

The same.  Alsothe 650 has a page to calculate and show all sorts of info about your flight.

It is very handy to download the 430W simulator from Garmin.  Allows you to go through all the menus, very realistically.    -dan

Does your iPad have GPS? If not, you need an external GPS. There are quite a few compatible products you can choose from. Some are only GPS, some additionally provide backup attitude and ADSB traffic and WX.

As @haissaid, your ipad needs gps.  The ones that are cellular capable definitely have gps.  If no gps, then you need external like a scout, sentry, strus, etc.  what avionics do you have installed, some of them will provide gps to an ipad (gtx345 being one).

It has GPS. It will pin point my location sitting in my house. Take away the internet connection and everything stops.

As @Ragsf15e indicated above, the Scout, Sentry, Stratus, GTX-345, etc. can also provide GPS to the iPad.

I’m not an ipad superstar, but I’m pretty sure it can use “other location services” when connected to your home internet. It’s using other devices on your network like your phone or known network locations.  Try it outside your home not connected to your network.  If it’s not the cell version it likely doesn’t have gps.

I’ll second Rags comment. I purposely purchased my iPad with cellular in order to have GPS. I’ve never activated the cell and would not have purchased that option had it not been required in order to get GPS.

Not saying that’s still true with newer iPads but that was the case when I bought mine 5 years ago.

Yours is behaving like an iPad without GPS.

@mikey757 if you do find it doesn’t have gps, it’s not hard to get an external one which will also likely get you adsb in traffic and weather on the ipad.

My iPad will show me location without wifi or cell service.

I can track my flight on commercial airliners with the iPad in Airplane mode.

Interesting.  I have not tried that, but it must receive GPS signal directly.  And apparently Airplane Mode just turns off the transmitters, and not the receivers.  Any chance your iPad is getting access to the Internet via your phone (similar to the way the Apple Watch gets Internet access via iPhone)?

Yes, but is the ipad capable of cell service, even if you don’t have a sim card in it or cell service enabled?  Because the models that are capable of cell also have a separate gps.  Some models do have a separate gps, but all the cell capable ones have it.

I have an ipad mini without gps and it only provides position when connected to the internet or an external gps in the airplane.

airplane mode doesn’t disable gps reception.

IPads that are WiFi only do not have GPS.

iPads with cellular and WiFi have GPS. The GPS is part of the cellular chipset because it is “assisted” GPS and uses the cellular system to improve location availability and accuracy.

If the iPad has GPS, it does not require a cellular or WiFi signal for the GPS receiver to provide location so long as the iPad has a clear view of the sky.

Nope.  Phone is in airplane mode also.

Cellular iPads have GPS receivers.   Wifi only iPads do not.
