I know, I know, not aviation. MotoGP is by far the best racing, the best entertainment, and most intriguing world racing series on the planet.

Noticed no one commented on your enthusiastic post.  Yes Motogp is truly the most intense type of motor sport.  Anyone that hasn’t experienced the shear violent way that a modern super bike accelerates and stops has no idea of the incredible athletic demands these riders face multiply by double for the power these GP bikes make.  As a Yamaha fan I know this is going to be a tough year as the Ducati’s are going to be on top.  But it’s only one race so we shall see. Enjoy the season.

F1 and Moto GP have similar acceleration to 100 KPH or 62 MPH.  In the range of 2.6 seconds.  But to 300 KPH, the F1 car takes significantly less time to get there.

Braking the F1 car wins.  Current F1 cars can corner and brake at around 5 G.

Overall lap times are much quicker with F1.

"F1’s cornering speeds hand it a significant advantage, even on tracks with few turns: Valtteri Bottas’s pole time of 1m02.939s in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix in 2020 far outstripped the 1m23.450s set by MotoGP’s polesitter Maverick Vinales that same year."

"Let's compare their performance over a lap at the Austin circuit in 2015:

                                      Formula 1       MotoGP
Best racing time            1'40''666        2'04''251
Highest racing speed    332,3 km/h    344,2 km/h"

So MotoGP does have a higher top speed.  But lose in braking and cornering.

I am more of an F1 fan, but do enjoy MotoGP.

Yes all true regarding the comparison to F1 but I think you’re missing the point.  The F1 car does do these things at a higher level than the moto GP bike but the driver is surrounded by form fitting seats side bolsters and a serious harness.  A moto GP rider throws a leg over and has to maintain control with nothing more than physical strength arms legs hands etc.  The rider has to make the bike perform at this intense performance using his entire body like watching a gymnast on a balance beam going 200 mph.  Don’t get me wrong I love the Formula one and the drivers are also incredible athletes.  Also in modern F1 there is not a lot of passing just do to the nature of the sport DRS has helped making it more interesting whereas Moto GP there is a much greater level of close competition as the smaller size of the bike allows for many different approaches to cornering braking and acceleration out of the turn.  There is more to racing than just lap times but no question F1 is definitely faster.

Did you watch last season?   Passing is very common now.  Not only DRS, but aero changes that allow them to run closer together.

Yes, I like MotoGP, and yes, they are crazy for doing what they do on bike.  That is why I no longer own a bike.  I know I would end up with liter sport bike, and I am too old to rol down the track at 175 MPH after falling off. :D

Just pointing out, cars are faster. :D

Even on the street.

The cars are faster around the track, obviously. It all comes down to the contact patch between the tires and the track. F1 has almost 12x the contact tire patch over the bikes, and much larger breaks at triple the size and double in number. This is like comparing an Acclaim against a TBM. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

However, when it comes to the actual racing, MotoGP is far more entertaining and exciting as a whole. That statement is just fact. Any race in any series can become boring, processesional, or a foregone conclusion (F1). MotoGP however, that is few and far between.

As Anthony always disclaims:

Not an F1 driver

Not a MotoGP pilot,

Not an AP

A thread that got @bonal out from hiding!!!   :)

The flying season must be starting up again!

I saw JK earlier…

In case anyone thinks this thread isn’t Mooney related…

The best Mooney Artist ever… is participating in this thread.   :)

His art has supported Mooney Summit a few times…

F1 uses interesting inverted aerodynamics to create downforce…

Do the MotoGP guys have any aero?

Best regards,

The short answer is yes. Aero has been in the rules now for a few years along with other technological improvements. Track records get bettered every year at every track. The corner speed along with the lean angles achieved are amazing. Almost impossible to believe it if you didn't see it happening lap after lap. The upcoming problem is that the speeds achieved now have and are outgrowing the older classic tracks.

Bill Burr, a comedian does a podcast titled "Monday morning podcast". He is working on his helicopter license and it's very entertaining to listen to him enthusiastically discuss his cross country's in crowded LA air space. He went to the MotoGP race in Austin. He spoke for 37 minutes just on his race experience, he is a huge fan and had the opportunity to do a lap and a half before the race on a Ducati. He freely admits that he is a novice on bikes, but said it was an unbelievable experience got to hand out the manufactures trophy to Honda that had rarned it.  Give it a listen, I believe it was just this past Monday.  It s salty, so if big boy language is a problem  stay clear...

I was there. The race winner and podium was unexpected, but welcome. The race itself was okay, not the most entertaining I've seen, but full of suprises.

The Austin track is very unique as far as world championships go. It is a blast to ride even if you don't have the horsepower to win. Great weather made all three days fun to attend.
