blaine beaven Posted March 24, 2023 Report Posted March 24, 2023 Hello all. My starter adaptor on my 1978J decided to stop starting today, while I was away from home. The bendix will not engage, and the motor just whirs. Was eventually able to get it started by hand and flew home. Reviewing the logs, it looks like it might be the original starter. From looking at it, there is a Kelly Aerospace tag on the adaptor and MagnaFlight logo on the motor body. I am expecting I will simply have to replace. I haven’t had to buy a starter for a plane in a long time. What do people recommend? I know there are some light weight options - are they worth it? Thank you in advance for everyone’s insight. ArtVandelay Posted March 24, 2023 Report Posted March 24, 2023 The lightweight Skytech starters are popular, I’ve had mix results, my 1st one lasted only about 5 years, my AP says that’s normal these days. 1 Quote
PT20J Posted March 24, 2023 Report Posted March 24, 2023 Technically, starter adapters are a Continental engine thing, but we knew what you meant. I've got a Sky-Tech 149NL that has been good for 500 hrs so far. Quote
PT20J Posted March 24, 2023 Report Posted March 24, 2023 Also, you might try lubricating the shaft with silicone spray -- maybe it's just stuck. Quote

Blaine If you are looking for lightweight, the SkyTec 149NL 12volt should work on yours. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/inlinelycoming_07-00762.php Quote

Beard Posted March 24, 2023 Report Posted March 24, 2023 I too installed a SkyTec about 6 years ago. No problems and I love it. Quote
