Hi All,

I'm looking for advice. I bought a 1965 Mooney M20C. The airframe is fantastic, as it spent most of it's life in dry climates in the West. It has smooth belly, gap seals, 6 pac panel mod, etc. However, I've decided that the cost of restoring her is too much for me. The engine has been pulled for another project. Is there any money in selling part of, or the whole airplane? What should I do with it? Looking for any advice...

Thanks - Rob

Airplanes have their most value when the are complete and in AW condition...

Selling it off in parts... is OK if you are a plane dismantler and a steady stream of customers are coming to you because you have a lot of plane parts.

Trying to sell it while it is missing the front end... requires a special buyer...  like a mechanic with plenty of spare time... and extra money...

Try to advertise it for sale... you might find a mechanic with time and money...  post pics of all its details...

Pulling the engine for another project, has killed the extra value of being complete and in AW condition...

Or contact Alan...

Or find an engine and re-assemble this plane... The instrument panel looks pretty nice.  Kind of modern...

Best regards,

Thanks for the replies. I put it on Barnstormers, so we'll see what happens. I didn't put a price, just "best offer". Any ideas on what I should try to get for it?

Anything you can get , is acceptable , There is about 4000 in parts there , but it is a lot of work , to market and sell... Depends on what you value your time at ..

It would be a shame to see this cut up.  Engines and props are always available.

You can keep cutting up the junk ones, we maintainers need some good ones to fix.

It seems like the market is pretty tight if you're a buyer right now, even for C models, and prices look quite inflated.  Could there be enough economic incentive for folks to restore essentially complete planes like this?  Probably not - wishful thinking.  Even if that were the case, the value of a complete airframe that is far from in flying condition would be negligible.

Actually people do it all of the time, but usually there is an engine and prop to overhaul.

My neighborhood isn’t all that big about 80 houses. two people rebuild / overhaul and or actually build at least one aircraft each over winter. One guy is from Maine and builds a Super Cub every year, the other guy is from Alaska and shows up with a Beaver that he refurbs. Both do it to sell, as those two aircraft are quite sought after they can be quite a bit of profit. The Beaver guy has moved on, the Super Cub guy just sold this years project for $100,000

Average Crop duster is an A&P and during the off season it’s pretty common they refurb an aircraft to sell

Well if the price has been set...I’ll give you $4,100

That would be a good deal, look at what a complete quick build from Van’s Aircraft will cost you.

Looks like you are in Utah- me too. If you want, shoot me a message. I'd love to get some additional information about where you're located and what you're looking for. I'm in process of finding out if insurance will cover repairs on another M20C, but if they won't, this could be worthwhile to help us repair our plane... (Assuming we can find a mechanic who is willing to help us repair using used parts, I'm not really sure if that's a realistic possibility or not) if it hasn't been sold by the time we get all the needed information from the insurance company and mechanics looking at it.

When you say you pulled the engine, are you referring to the full assembly including prop or do you have the prop assembly still?

whoever moves this one can do it without damage or cutting it. remove the tail first then unrivet the tailcone in front of the baggage door.  only a few bolts and connections to have the entire tailcone off.  I did it solo and had it on a trailer sideways in one day and I am over 80 years old.  photos on here someplace.

Sent a PM.  I am looking for a project.  I hope you will save it if the airframe is good.  There are enough out there for the salvage guys.

If it is at Hurricane, I have a hangar only a few miles away.
