I have been advised that none of the small 2 inch Garmin GPS units ( specificly the GPS 175, GNX 375 or the GNC 355) will interface with a BendixKing EFIS 40 which is what I have in my Bravo. So my other option is to install a GTN650xi to replace my KLN90b and my KNS81 and KY196a.

All costing approx. $16500 installed.

I would welcome any other alternative suggestions that might be better, within a similar price range, say up to $20,000 installed.

And can anyone confirm that the smaller GPS units are not compatible with the EFIS 40.

Cheers

I’d consider pairing the gps 175 with a g5 hsi to replace both the 90b and efis 40.

Definitely, and that would probably be under his original price point.

Or even a GI-275 if that fits better.

Now might be the time to go with dual Gi275s and the new -175 (or other 2” gps).  That will probably put you right at $20k and much better function.

Actually the dual GI 275’s and the GPS 175 was an alternative and comes in at $21,250 and this system is compatible with the KFC autopilot.

Thanks for the advice. This whole thing started out just upgrading my old KLN90b for $7100, so now all I have to do is come up with the additional cash.

Gotta love spending other people’s $$!

I think you could save $5-10k by just doing the G5 hsi and -175 that @MIm20c suggested, but I think youd be a lot happier with the two gi-275s in the long run.

At $21,250 your pretty close to dual G5s+GPS 175+GFC500 setup. It is my understanding that ballpark price installed is about 23K to 26K.

Weekend rules regarding spending OPM are still in effect...

Let me start with...

What is BK... and what is an EFIS 40...

Gives a hint to when I stopped looking for new BK equipment...

Let’s be serious... Google BK EFIS40...

Read the first option...

A post from an MSer...

A pretty well known CFII...

Find the opening post in this thread...

Out with the BK EFIS 40...  then decide what avionics company you want to standardize on...

We currently have two... big G, Dynon, possibly some Avidyne... and for a company that really doesn’t love you... Stec...

How long can you keep the EFIS40 going?  Is it like the other BK displays? (20/200)

PP thoughts only, not an avionics guru...

Best regards,

-a-

You are sitting right on the edge of a cliff and most certainly will fall off in the not too distant future.  It was the failure of my EFIS 40 (Electronic Flight Information System) that led to my upgrading my panel.  BK wanted over $18,000 to repair what amounted to 30 year old technology, totally hardware oriented, that required new expensive hardware for any change that was made for it--and all it was was a glorified HSI that had infinitely less capability than what is now the Garmin G5.  I would rate its value today at $0.00.  In fact less than Zero if you were to sell your airplane today.  The sooner you get rid of it the better.

Regarding the KLN90B, it was the best of its generation, but that was 2 generations ago.  The GTNs have so much more capability that it's time to usher in the new generation in my opinion.  Say goodbye to the trusty KSN81 and KY196A while you're at it.  They, too, have pretty well out lived their usefulness.  You'll be much happier with the GTN 750Xi than the GTN 650Xi.  Better yet, get both as long as you're at it.
