Ok, so the engine is in the shop and I want it to come back with a filter instead of a screen. It’s an IO-360 A1A in a 66’ M20e.

Shop is asking if I want an ECi 90 degree adapter. I can’t determine if it will fit. Anyone know for sure?

I’ve seen the lycoming kits. They seem overpriced. I’m pretty sure that would work though.

Then I see this Donaldson adapter that some of you use. It looks like it is missing a bunch of parts found in the lycoming kit so it may not actually be cheaper.

So questions... will the ECi adapter work?  Will it fit in my Mooney? I need to be sure if I say ok.
I don’t need new oil cooler lines for any of this do I?  I already have new ones.
is the Donaldson one the lowest cost way to go?

i honestly don’t care if the filter is horizontal or vertical. I can deal with catching the drips. Just need to pick the lowest cost option that works really. I think the lowest cost is actually the ECi. But I’m not sure.

The standard Lycoming adapter works fine and allows you to install either a 48110 or 48111 long filter.  I’ve never seen a 90 degree adapter installed on a Mooney.  I don’t think you’d get the top engine cowl on.

Nuke,

This topic comes up every now and then...

I don’t remember the usual answer...

A filter would be much better than a screen...

Some easy reading of my search...

https://mooneyspace.com/search/?q=Oil filter adapter kit&updated_after=any&sortby=relevancy&search_and_or=and

Wait a day to see how many people respond...

Best regards,

Thanks for the reply.  I've read all the posts I could find on this topic several times.  I've only seen one or two cases of someone reporting they used this ECI adapter and it wasn't on an E model.

My path of least resistance here is to the tell the engine shop "yes" on this ECI adapter since this is what they recommended and it might be the lowest cost option.  However, it would really suck if it ended up not working after getting the engine back so I'm looking for an actual case in my application or at least pictures of this filter installed on the IO-360 so I can consider if it is likely to work.

Thanks Clarence,

If I get the lower cost Donaldson "adapter" do you know if we have to buy a bunch of other stuff to get it to work?  I'm not sure why this part is offered alone if more is needed to apply it.

One thing that is confusing me is the Lycoming paper on adapting older engines to spin on filters is that it talks about the adapter attaching to the "Filter screen housing".  I've removed the filter screen myself, its a real pain on the IO-360 in the M20E.  Its down low on the back and only about 3 inches from the firewall.  There is no way a filter will fit there.  However, I've seen pictures of the filter on these engines and they are up high between the mags.  They seem to replace something that is already there on the back of the gear case.  I'm assuming the language in the Lycoming paper is just confusing and the adapter really goes high between the mags.  Does this sound right?

Just don’t use the Airwolf adaptor. I don’t like Teflon seals they use at the swivel fittings.
Stock Lycoming adaptor works great!
Just make sure you use the correct gasket. The oil P screen gasket and the gasket for the oil filter adaptor are two different ones. The wrong gasket bypasses the oil cooler. :-)

There is a suction screen and a filter screen. Suction screen is at bottom of sump. Filter replaces the filter screen on the accessory case.

I see now.  I didn't realize there are two screens in this system.  Thanks

Do you know if folks remove the suction screen if we are adding the spin on filter?  I suppose this protects the oil pump (probably a gear pump) from damage if something comes apart, but i was hoping that I'd never have to remove and check that screen again.  lol

I believe the lower screen stays and the upper one between the mags gets removed with the installation of the spin-on adapter
