jetdriven Posted September 27, 2019 Report Posted September 27, 2019 Opening my kit this JPI OAT probe is like a half inch in diameter. Looks like it belongs on a World War II bomber Than a clean slick Mooney. Does anybody know the specs on this thing, can I use a smaller OAT probe? I know for example Davtron probes are pretty skinny. Quote
Andy95W Posted September 27, 2019 Report Posted September 27, 2019 I installed mine in the fresh air inlet. I didn't notice any airspeed loss. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted September 27, 2019 Report Posted September 27, 2019 I installed mine in the fresh air inlet. I didn't notice any airspeed loss. Ditto, it also makes for a trivial installation, no routing wires through the wing.Tom Quote
KSMooniac Posted September 27, 2019 Report Posted September 27, 2019 I put mine under the wing, just like the factory location. It is large, and I've thought of making some fiberglass speed fairings to fair it in!Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk Quote
kortopates Posted September 27, 2019 Report Posted September 27, 2019 The wing location, or my latest now being the tail fairing below the horizontal stab, are far superior locations. The NACA inlet duct is super convenient and every installers favorite but I found, at least in my K, that the air temp is contaminated by nearby engine and exhaust heat - it's always read high at 32F (compared to factory wing mount) which was sorta the whole point of wanting it. I have since removed my factory gauges and have both a Garmin and JPI sensor back on the tail which is working out well. Quote
Steve W Posted September 27, 2019 Report Posted September 27, 2019 It's a K type thermocouple(as you'll quickly find out if you try and extend it with anything except thermocouple wire) I'm sure someone else sells OAT probes like that, but they're not common. Luckily I had plenty of time to route the wing wiring for my A&P. And having done it in my attic, I'm getting pretty good at it, the one helpful thing was my little semi-flexible camera so I could see where the wire was when I missed the next hole. Quote

The JPI allows you to correct for variations, I adjusted mine -2° after some experiments.Tom Quote
carusoam Posted October 30, 2019 Report Posted October 30, 2019 note for Byron @jetdriven Late to the party with old info... The modern Mooney OAT sensor looks like a worn pencil eraser... just a nub of 1/2 sphere... tiny, hiding under the wing somewhere... See if you can find what is being used there... Best regards, -a- Quote
jetdriven Posted October 30, 2019 Author Report Posted October 30, 2019 I pulled wire out to the location of the other probe out there and install the JPI probe. If you leave the guard off of it it’s actually quite small so we just used it with a nut 1 Quote
