I have a question pertaining to my tail mounted VOR antenna which recently became dislodged and needs to be replaced.  Apparently you need to replace both sides and not just one side but in any event I’m looking for either a direct replacement part (82 M20K 231) for the broken one currently installed and/or I wanted to get some opinions on what you all though the feasibility would be of totally removing the antenna from the tail and mounting the VOR coax cable and antenna in the wing tips which is really what I would like to do if at all possible.  I saw this kind of antenna on the chief avionics web site (http://www.chiefaircraft.com/sa-003.html). I’m wondering if these could also track a Glide Slope and how big of a job time wise it would be to find someone to run the cables through the wings and mount the antenna in the wing tips if it’s possible for my make/mode Mooney. I called Daytona Aircraft Services (the Mooney MSC that maintains by aircraft) and the avionics manager said he never did it and it really wasn’t feasible for whatever reason.  I’m not 100% sure that’s the case and wanted to see what you all might know about the subject if anything to include who else I might be able to call in the SE with some experience handling this type of Mooney specific project?

Thanks in advance for any input!

running a cable inside the leading edge of a wing is a pain. The pannels are small and very spaced> They don't make it  for an easy running  a cable in the holes in the ribs.  As far as the antenna being approved, you may want to check with Spruce or Chief if it has an STC for your Mooney.

VOR and ILS signals are in the 100Mhz range and I have an antenna mounted like you speak of.  The GS signal is in the 300 Mhz range.  My antenna for the GS is located under the belly, I would guess you have one there too.  I dont think I have ever heard of a single antenna doing both but I have been wrong before.

If you are looking at this antenna: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/sa-003-2.html   then answer no.

It is common to use the VOR antenna for GS reception as well.  The VOR antenna at about 110 MHz has a third-harmonic resonance that makes it useful at the GS frequencies as well.   One often finds a splitter in the VOR receiver antenna coaxial line to connect a GS receiver.

The VOR/GS signals are horizontally polarized. In order to get good reception the antenna cannot be shadowed by the airframe like in the case of wing tip mounted antennas. You may get good reception in one direction but not on the opposite direction. This why the are installed high on the vertical fin. Most VOR antennas will resonate on the third harmonic allowing them to be used for GS reception also. I have this splitter  http://price.aero/product/COMANT-DUAL-VOR-DUAL-GS-CI-1125.html on my plane for dual VOR/GS reception and it works very well out of a single VOR antenna on the vertical fin. It allowed me to remove the winshield mounted GS dipole antenna. I think replacing the VOR antenna on the fin would be your least expensive option.
