MARZ Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 If anyone pulls the trigger on this, I would be interested in your gently used exhaust and risers to fit the IO 360 a1a in a 67 F - drop me a PM. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 $3500 buys a lot of 100LL. 2-4 knots and down time for installation and an increased fuel flow. Not for me. I can always increase RPM and fuel flow to go 2-4 knots faster in my M20E. Just not a significant enough speed gain to make me go for it. If I had extra cash I would consider only when doing a major and/or over-hauling existing exhaust. Quote
rbridges Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 my m20c had the 201 cowling/windshield/powerflo exhaust before I bought it, so I can't tell you how much any single mod helped. Just messing around in the 5-7K altitude range, I seem to get an honest 148-150 knot average. So, with all 3 mods, I'm guessing a 10-15 knot increase. I would imagine most of the speed increase vs. a stock C model is from the cowling. Quote
Guest Posted August 5, 2011 Report Posted August 5, 2011 On my 1970C I gained in all areas. Shorter take off, around 100ft per min better climb, runs cooler and + 4-5 kts around 8-9 K plus the sound is awesome down low. I dont know about fuel flows cause I didnt by a Mooney to fly slow. Quote
THASE Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 I put it on my '84 J and really like it. Is it worth $3500? Maybe, maybe not. I needed a little help with climb at altitude and it has delivered for me. Don't over anal'yse it. Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 aerobat95 - two decades ago I had SWTA install wing root fairings and wing tips on my 65E. A few months later, at Oshkosh, I heard John Ronce (Rutan aerodynamicist) say that you could not beat a clean 90 degree transition from wing to fuselage. I have really liked the wing tips. Doing it again I would add the wing tips and skip the root fairings. I think Lasar makes the tips that SWTA uses, I would call them direct. Wonder if the VOR antenna in the tips idea has worked out, they were just experimenting with it in the early 90s. I suspect paint type may affect. Quote
aerobat95 Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Steve65E-NC - Thanks for the input. After doing some reading I decided to skip the wing root fairings. I need to get the hinge covers for the tail and I might do the the tail mods as well. I am still interested in the powerflow exhaust as well. I like the idea of a little boost....but who knows....I would really like to get some pireps from guys with the IO-360. Quote
eldeano Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 I purchased my 66 M20C with PF installed, previous owner claims performance increased in all areas. I cruise at 148kts true at 24/24 at around the 5000 foot level. I also agree that it increased the fuel flow judging on my fuel burn compared to others. But that's ok because I have huge fuel tanks!!........................................................Oh wait. Where's that thread on Monroy extended fuel tanks? Quote

jetdriven Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 I think the nice advantage to the Powerflow is the ability to go faster on more gas, or to pull back to the previous TAS and save the .5 GPH or so. But no one with fast planes does that; as a Bonanza friend I have says, "We didn't buy these things to go slow!" Quote
animalmover Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 My '61 B got a 3-4 knot boost and seemed the db level went down as well ( mabey just wishful thinking ). Quote
Alan Fox Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 I had a friend with a piper that bought the pf , and he was disapointed .... Looking at my stock B exhaust , there is little or no backpressure on the system to begin with , so I dont see how you can improve the flow ...One of the best features of the Mooney is the economy of the fuel burn vs speed , It seems that this only has a minor benefit at wide open throttle , I dont run my engine that hard , The only time I am wide open is at 8000 feet or higher .... Put your money in Aerodynamic mods or the panel... Good luck Quote
crxcte Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 Information I found for a 20F before cancelling Order Louder exhaust sound Requires disassembling at annual for inspection and lubing joints Tuned for 11K' with possible 2-3 kts increase Increase in climb performance Increase in fuel burn below tune altitude Quote
Jsavage3 Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 I like it -- bought the Mooney with it already installed, so I can't compare it too much myself, but here's a couple of observations: I climb at 120 KIAS and I see 800 to 1000 fpm in the climb even when pushing gross weight. This bird has alot of get up & go. It also has the K&N air filter mod and GAMIs, so that may be helping too. It is noisy for those outside the airplane...inside not bad in my opinion. 157 to 158 KTAS in cruise at anywhere from 9.4 to 10.2 gph depending on altitude...8 to 10K is where she seems happy, about 9.5 gph.
