As a parent of a couple of small children.  Now I know why my parents sparked the $hit out of me and my brothers.  As a pediatrician I have to rely on time outs and a token economy.  The later approach is less violent and it works the same.

+1  My mother says the first swat was for me, the next few were for her... With a couple small kids at home including a three-nager, I understand.

I think my parents spanked me for exercise. A few years ago I was walking through the clothing dept of a local store, some guy was trying on a belt,I think my butt cheeks twitched a little as I heard the belt coming out of the belt loops
