I am trying to determine the value of a working when removed JPI EDM 800 6 cylinder engine monitor. I have scoured all the major publications like Trade a Plane and Controller.com to try and find a used instrument but have come up empty. I see that new units (for 6 cylinder engines) are selling for about $3000 although there is currently a Sun N Fun deal offered for $2700. Without a yellow tag, I can't reasonably expect a new price but the unit was working when removed from my plane so it must be worth something. Does anyone have a suggestion of where I can look to try and determine a value? Thanks

With all probes included? Maybe $1200-1500.  Problem is that it was probably removed for an 830/930 upgrade so they kept the probes.  Those run more than $100 each.  For a 231 if you throw in OAT you'll have almost $1500 just in probes.  If it doesn't include them, I think I would rather just buy a new one for $2700 and not worry about it.

Modern electronics that are still for sale today...  (the most valuable)

Brand new looking... (the most valuable)

Sold by a known MSer... (extra valuable...)

Compare to Ebay’s Sold prices... (prices for the same thing, that have actually sold...) a helpful guideline...

A bit of a challenge... it is set up for an M20K to get it fit for a four cylinder plane... a return to the factory may be required... or it does it’s auto recognition of all the probes and sets itself up correctly...

There are a couple of MSers that handle the used JPI equipment... consult with them, or sell to them...

How much work do you want To put into this project?

For fun.... find the new cost of what you have with all the discounts available... and cut it in half...

See if there is any interest in the item at that price... surely it is worth half...

Expect the CB crowd To start at the other end... surely it is worth more than 0...

The real challenge is the installation time... it is tough to be a CB and afford a weeks worth of installation time....

Good luck with whatever happens... hope Somebody at MS meets you in the middle somewhere...

Best regards,

The 700 displays with FF bring around $400. With the probes probably 7-800. You’ll probably make an extra $100 if you keep all the old probes on the plane which IMO is false economy. I’m not sure what the price delta is between the 700 and 800 display.

What are you trying to upgrade to?

Thanks all...its coming out for a 900 upgrade and my mechanic is willing to take it in lieu of some install labor...just trying to get a sense of a fair exchange value. i will also have some OEM engine gauges ( some working, some inop) that I will throw on here if anyone is interested. The inop are 1/2 of a split gauge like the CDT/TIT and MP/FF gauges. For all I know, they are paperweights and need to be pitched.

Great plan!  In that case I’d start with the range that @Andy95W had above. The MP and RPM sensors along with tit etc will make it far more valuable than the 700.

The G3X engine displays are primary. And, from what I am reading, the G3X can use all manner of existing engine probes as installed, even if those probes were not originally part of an approved primary display.

Here is the pinout for the EDM-800 EGT and CHT 25 pin d-sub connector:

In the G3X, Garmin went so far as to match connector type (but not the pinout) from the EDM-700/800 etc series so that connector plugs into an identical receptacle into a unit called the GEA 24:

Here is the pinout, you would have to spend some quality time with your d-sub extractor to move the pins around, but it is sure a lot more cost effective than buying and installing all new probes.

Would it be easier just to make a crossover cable?

Hmm. Typically the fewer connections the better. I don't think moving those pins around in the d-sub shell would be too difficult.
