65eTurbo Posted January 26, 2019 Report Posted January 26, 2019 Hi all. I'm recommissioning my Mooney, and planning on keeping the 90s era avionics, but with a lynx 9000 in place of the transponder. That said, the display on my dme has seen better days. Anyone know a good source for display cover replacement/refurbishing? See attached. Quote
carusoam Posted January 26, 2019 Report Posted January 26, 2019 DME is going away (in popularity). It is being replaced quite handily using GPS... (even though they measure slant range) The FAA has some specific wording somewhere... explaining why it is legal to use GPS distance when charts are still in Slant range? BK has made it quite difficult to get parts for displays, but so many used ones are becoming available... PP thoughts only, not an instrument guy... Best regards, -a- Quote

Culver LFA Posted January 26, 2019 Report Posted January 26, 2019 @65eTurbo Does the dme display work or do you just need a lens? Quote
65eTurbo Posted January 27, 2019 Author Report Posted January 27, 2019 Good point that dme is obsolete. I think it is just the lens. If not, I'll placard inop and ignore. Quote

Immelman Posted January 29, 2019 Report Posted January 29, 2019 Ebay is your friend. If its just the lens and its trashed.. perhaps some time experimenting with a micromesh kit? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted January 29, 2019 Report Posted January 29, 2019 Somebody out there makes aftermarket lenses. Quote
jaylw314 Posted January 29, 2019 Report Posted January 29, 2019 I got a KN64 lens from these guys. $67.50. I asked my mechanic if he'd be willing to sign off on it, and he just rolled his eyes and told me to put it in and don't tell him. 1 1 Quote

I should point out that your KN64 lens looks like mine did, so the lens will probably come out as two separate layers that have delaminated. At least, I'm assuming they were originally one piece. But don't freak out when you remove two pieces of plastic, but only get one in the mail Quote

Slant range is only appreciably different within very close range of the station. if you're 5 nm away and 1 nm up (6,000' AGL) your error is only 4%. Especially on approaches where altitudes tend to be low, it's still gonna be good enough for government work . Quote
steingar Posted January 29, 2019 Report Posted January 29, 2019 I bet you could get a working DME for the price of the screen. BK parts are in short supply and high demand. Boy did they ever drop the ball. I agree with Lacecasper, if it ain't broke it ain't obsolete. Should be able to use it to do something. A pity it doesn't bring in ball games. Quote
65eTurbo Posted January 29, 2019 Author Report Posted January 29, 2019 Thanks all. I'll report back with what I wind up doing with it. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll only be able to stretch my GX60 until the end of 2021, as data updates will be discontinued 12/2020. At that point, no legal GPS and no DME will force me to do something to file /G and shoot DME approaches. Quote
