ADS-B In on Aspen PFD

My panel currently has a GNS 430W and an Aspen PFD with synthetic vision. I’m about to install a GTX 345 for ADS-B in/out. ADS-B in will display on the 430W and my iPAD (via Bluetooth). The ADS-B in display capability on the PFD seems pretty limited, so I’m thinking of not connecting the Aspen to the GTX 345. 

Wondering if anyone has experience with the ADS-B traffic and weather displays on an Aspen PFD with or without synthetic vision, and how useful it is. Will I be sorry if I don’t hook it up?

I have ADS-B traffic and weather from my Garmin 345 to my Aspens. I have the three panel system and have traffic and weather on the MFDs and synthetic vision on all three. I also have traffic on my Avidyne 550. Generally I also run an iPad with an app (either iFly GPS, Wing X, Fly Q, FltPlan GO or Aerovie - I have them all) through an external, portable ADS-B source that also has traffic and weather. I love it !

Skip - I have the Aspen 2000 with the ADS-B enablement turned on. I’m a bit spoiled because the MFD is a great platform for displaying traffic, weather and the StormScope all at the same time.

With just a PFD, you’ll be able to display traffic and weather on the PFD’s map without synthetic vision. With SV turned on, the weather part is removed in favor of the terrain. With SV, traffic will show up on the AI as a target.

Here are some different views.

This shot is showing traffic on the PFD. You’ll see the yellow target in my path which is a plane on the ground at the airport I’m landing at. As well, you’ll see other traffic around me. The scale is set for 2 nm which is fine for traffic near you.



This picture is showing traffic on the full page SV. You can see the plane 900’ above me on the left side of the AI.



This picture is showing a 2 nm weather view. I’m on the ground after flying through the rain shown on the MFD. You can move the scale out to 10 nm and you’ll get a better weather picture. It also shows the ARC mode which will display more stuff directly in front of you.



This picture shows traffic out past 15 nm on the SV AI. Again, you can zoom out the HSI’s map and see more.



If I just had a PFD, I would purchase the ADS-B enablement package for the PFD. Being able to see weather and traffic without looking over at the GPS is a plus.

Thanks!! Great pictures worth a few thousand words at least, and really helpful. It makes me long for the Aspen MFD, though.  But I can see advantages with just the PFD for now.

Does the ads-b show lightning strikes? or do you still need a stormscope?  Someone told me the Aspen PFD and gtx345 would show the strikes but thought it would be similar to the ads-b on my foreflight.

The aspen can be a display for a wx500 but you will need the hazard unlock. The info (Lighting strikes) imported from the 345 will not be in real time and would not be used like a stormscope.

I’m not sure of the status of the FIS-B lightning data on the Aspens. I have a Lynx and at this point it does not show FIS-B lightning. It will show the real time WX-500 lightning.

Lightning strikes and the other six or so upgraded weather products in FIS-B are being sent in the data stream. Aspen has not upgraded the software to display these yet.

We swear by it out here and virtually all Aspen Installations we advise them to go with it strictly for situational awareness and as a fallback should your existing main display for traffic fail,  Either way, it is nice to have right in front of you and if you do not want to see it on the Aspen, turn it off.  Bada Boom Bada Bing!!!

I did have the wiring put in, but the AD was still active at the time so I couldn't get the unlock to activate it. Will get that done next time it goes to the radio shop. Thanks everyone for the helpful comment and insights.

For those of you with Aspen 1500, 2000 or 2500 systems, you will be pleasantly surprised with some of the new ADS-B features that the higher speed processor will support. One of my pet peeves was why they couldn’t leave the N number of TIS-B traffic on. They do now...



Another nice feature is the METAR flags are on the main Nav page. Easy to scroll to an airport and pickup the weather (as well as all the other airport information).

I forget, how are you pushing ADS-B into your Aspen?  I plan to swap my kt74 for a gtx345 this year to get it on mine.  On a side note, can you see much difference b/t the non-max and max screens?  I feel like I have the worst eyes on the planet.  Everyone keeps oohing and ahhing over the new displays, but I can't see a big difference in pics.  I have the 2000MAX, but I never flew behind the non-max very long.

The Max screen definitely has a higher resolution that you can see. I am using a Lynx 9000 for the ADS-B in. I wanted active traffic and the Lynx I bought has it. The active traffic continues to show more traffic than I ever saw with just TIS-B. What I have noticed is the richest of color when compared to the ESI-500 in my plane. The ESI-500 is very vibrant and the non-Max units are not.

The other thing is I keep finding little niceties that I didn’t have with the non-Max units. Like having a timer on the chart page. It is only a count up timer, but it really makes it nice to quickly start a timer this easy.
