It was just a fantastic tail wind day. It ended up such a short flight that basically I went up and then almost right away I had to come down again. Not to derail the discussion and one response please to limit that possibility, but I'm wondering about turbulence climbing and descending with winds aloft like that. I imagine it was pretty bumpy ? And the winds that day...not much time to enjoy the ground speed. :-). My only regret is I didn't crank that motor up to full warp speed and try to squeeze out another 5 or 10 knots. Its a heck of a lot of work when coming in really hot on an ifr flight plan and shooting through all the way points and switching controllers that fast - I guess this is totally the normal speed of business for jets doing 400 or 500 knots but adding on an extra 100 knots to normal pace of business working through the system, for a mooney first time, makes a noticeable difference. 1 Quote

I imagine it was pretty bumpy ? I don't remember that about that day - but I have had many bumpy days - so I can say that it didn't stick out. But I know I have had days with significant tail winds on that same trip (but that was by far the biggest) and often what seems to happen is the wind is quite smooth but strong at high altitude like that. So you wouldn't even know you were in a wind if you didn't look at a GPS. But you need to be VERY careful coming down to keep it out of the yellow since on those massive tail wind days, there is often a layer, somewhere in the 4 to 8k altitude range, which I think is due to the leeward winds from the Adirondack mountains (which are up to 5k), where you hit a BIG bump all of a sudden. So no no to power decents on those days or else.... Edited November 22, 2017 by aviatoreb 1 Quote
Danb Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 I was coming home from Kansas City to Wilmington De a few yrs ago had tail winds of 155 knots at 17 or 18000 ft, was smooth as glass, turned at West Virginia with the same velocity but a quartering tail wind had to hold about a 35 * car ab angle. Real glad to be going east. 1 Quote

My camera doesn’t even work flying in to head winds. speaking of which I need to dig out the picture I have of my claimed top ground speed. 27,000 eh...speaking of which have any of you seen the story in the paper with guy and his homemade manned rocket he made - with flat earth society painted on the side - says he is finally going to prove the earth is flat. He expects to getup to....drum roll please...1,800 ft!!! I hope he survives this crazy mission. Quote
Yooper Rocketman Posted November 23, 2017 Report Posted November 23, 2017 My IPhone works in headwinds. I've just never seen the same level of tailwinds as I've seen of headwinds. Here's one of each. Tom Quote
Hank Posted November 23, 2017 Report Posted November 23, 2017 I've got pictures somewhere showing 183 knkts in my C one afternoon. Didn't take pictures the evening I was making 68 knots over the Blue Ridge mountains westbound toward Knoxville . . . . Pretty similar power settings on both, except the slow one was higher, 10,000 msl to clear the rocks and the freezing cloud tops. 1 Quote
