I've been digging around under the seats in the plane for some change to pay, but I think I'm going to have to maybe look in the couch too.

$11.67 sales tax.

$5.00 registration fee.

I think I can live with that.

Virginia has a 2% sales and use tax of the "fair market value" of the plane if you move the plane into VA for more than 60 days (even if you are a non-resident ).  I have no idea what source they use, but I'm not arguing with the tax department gal that gave me the FVM number to use... ;)

It's $5 a year after that for the registration.

Use tax = sales tax here in CA.

9.25% in my county.

Don't they waive that if the plane is out of California for the first 6 months?  I can't make heads or tails of their laws sometimes....

I think after a year of ownership there's no tax.  You'd have to register the plane in a tax free state (Oregon?).

I'm sure the authorities have ways to find you.

To clarify, SC is 1% annually for taxes. At least I think that's about right. Are you guys quoting annual taxes or just once when you purchase?

I believe the reduced rate for the annual use tax / registration in AZ is for airplanes older than 40 years and experimental airplanes. We used to pay for our "C" $26 in Phoenix. Riverside County, CA is 1% of value; have not gotten this years bill but should be about $440.

California residents are exempt if an airplanes, boat, etc is bought for the use outside of California. After the first year you can file for exception from sales tax and proof that the purchased item was out of State for the first 6 month typically satisfies the Board of Equalization that the item was bought with the intention to use outside of California.

Nice.   I won't worry so much, then, but will definitely compare once I have something to compare.

It helped that mine counts as an antique, being over 50 years old.  Not sure what it is for a newer model

7% of the purchase price here in VT.  Yea for me a chance to support a socialist agenda and give some tree hugging dirt worshippers some more free stuff!

This is not a political statement.  It's just life in Vermont.

That's exactly how I avoided the sales tax on a $200K+ aircraft about 15 years ago. It required submitting documentation proving the aircraft was kept and flown out of state for required number of months. Submitting my documentation to the state franchise board got me a letter of exemption. But I understand that program for personal use has been ended and now the remaining method is limited to strictly businesses. But the specifics are on the franchise tax board's web site.
Where ever you tie down or rent a hangar, they are obligated to give your N number to the county. Then it's just a matter of time till you get the bill.
So in CA it's sales tax at purchase without an exemption letter, no matter what state you purchase it in, then property tax annually at about 1.5%.

When I bought my Mooney it was in Calif and I lived in Nevada. It was delivered to Nevada. It was never based in Calif after I bought it. They chased me for a year and finally accepted my tie down receipts for 1 year in NV as proof that they didn't have a case for sales tax.  But that was 16+ years ago.

Mine came out of California as well, but the purchase was completed in AZ.  I'm sure I'm going to have to deal with the California Board of Equalization (if that's not an orwellian name....) at some point.

6% in Florida if you have it in the state for more than a few days in the first six months. I was happy to pay it. It amounted to a tiny fraction of the income tax I would be paying in some other state.
