Spin on filter for 1966 M20C

Hello Gentlemen, I have a stock 66 M20C and would like to have a spin on oil filter installed on my engine next annual. Does anyone have exp with having this done ? Is it possible to find a used spin on kit ? Mainly asking to make sure some other Mooney owner has done this conversion so I know I have the room under cowl. Any info would be greatly appreciated.....

I have a '65 that had a filter kit added.  It's on the pilot side by the cowl.  I don't know any specifics about the conversion though.  I have a 201 cowl but I don't see how that would be an issue based on where it's located.

I did my '66 C a year ago. I first discovered the third party kits (B&C?) don't fit the Mooney. I used a Lycoming adapter (sourced used from Preferred Airparts). It was doable but unpleasant work. I think the part number for the Lycoming adapter is easily determined, but I will look it up in my logs if no one else chimes in with it.

The Lycoming oil filter adapter is 77852.

A Lycoming filter adapter will require a gasket, 3 bolts, 1 stud and nut as well as washers and lock washers.  There are not difficult to install.

In my experience a remote filter is a waste of time for a Mooney.  They add additional hoses and brackets to an already tight engine compartment.  Install a Lycoming adapter and learn to change to oil spill free.

I have a 64 M20C with the spin on filter on the right side...I believe the assembly is mounted to firewall. I have only looked under the cowling twice..have only owned the plane for 3 weeks.

I agree, with the exception of the pre-1966 models (the ones that have cowlings held on by about 50 sheet metal screws). 

To do a simple oil change on one of these requires removal of all of those screws.  On my 64 C with remote oil filter, I only have to remove the right side.  Less work, less wear and tear on attachments and hardware.
