I'm neither buying nor selling. TEHO. Can you compare 4 CHTs or 4 EGTs and scan RPM, MAP, OilT, OilP, FF, FP, FuelUsed, Volts, Asecondson one instrument, without pushing any buttons? I can on my 930.

What do you know?! So can I !

JPI Remote Annunication Requirement.jpg

That's a good thing.  A lot of folks take that small detail for granted and do whatever they want.  :-)

I was first made aware of these "line of sight" requirements when I was shopping around for the GTN. Some of the avionic shops mentioned the possibility of a remote annunciator for it. While others did not. Whether that was due to prior knowledge or ignorance, well only they know for certain.

I got this Bob.

But can you do this in PURDY colors?

Neither! I chose to stay with the large screen EDM 800.

My plane came with the EDM700 and FS450 ff. I love the separate dedicated ff computer. I upgraded the 700 to a large display EDM800 and placed it in front of my face. The 800 is the most powerful engine monitor JPI had ever made imho. A 900 or 930 would not provide me with any additional info. Between this and the engine gauges across the top I have everything I need in my scan. Another benefit is it occupies "zero" additional panel real estate!  Therefore I'd rather spend my money on avgas than on a pretty color display!

That panel would be a LOT nicer looking with a G500!

N400YS - since this thread has taken the usual trip around the Mooney Mulberry bush, I think you should seek out some planes with different units and see what you like. I owned a GEM from Insight that only displayed EGT & CHT temps against a fixed scale. That was fine for years until I wanted data recording and extra parameters measured. Had the 900s gone down in price a year earlier, I would have skipped the 830 and jumped right to the 900 primary replacement.

I would also give some thought to what other upgrades you may be thinking about for the future. It may take you down the Peter Garmin path of looking for a unit that will sit in a standard panel opening. The main thing is that when you have one installed, it becomes an asset to help you lean and to give you a snapshot of what is going on with your engine in flight.

Heck Bob, if it were up to me, I would never turn those power sucking monsters on. The whirling sound of the electric meter alone keeps me up at night.

No, it is the Mrs. who insists I act pronto. Not even an offer of filling the Jacuzzi with her and ice water has deterred her fixation on getting that AC unit replaced.

Move to the UK then you wont need them or become naturist?

Well, I will be there in a couple of weeks checking out the Cheadle area.

Ok gentlemen, in October i am going to put in a JPI unit.  Without ripping the panel apart and costing myself a fortune, i was going to put it in a spare hole i have where the CDI for the old GPS was.  I need to:-

  1. lean accurately
  2. have fuel flow
  3. accurate cht and oil temp
i want to have

  1. Engine history available for download if possible.
Any idea which one i should go for as i honestly am so confused by the sales stuff i have been sent.

Ps is there anything i am missing?

It seems pretty simple to me. If you're happy with your primary gauges and panel space is tight buy an EDM 730 or 830. IMO the added features of the 830 make it a no-brainer. If you're tight on space and need/want primary gauges buy a 900. And if you're ripping out the panel and starting over go with the 930.

I'm VERY pleased with my 830 right in front of me on the left of the radio stack. It also displays everything previously mentioned on one screen with the exception of "amperage". If I ever get around to a complete do-over I'll install a 930 to go with my G500, 750, and auto-throttle.

What happened to keeping eyes outside the cockpit?

In IMC, the engine monitor is NOT part of the scan that keeps the airplane right side up and on course.

Under normal situations, the engine monitor can be checked periodically, every couple of minutes. If IMC, the autopilot is doing the flying and I'll watch the instruments and the engine monitor. In VFR, eyes are outside looking for traffic, and all the instruments fall into a periodic check to verify safe operations.

Besides, I can usually hear or feel issues that would be reflected on the engine monitor.

If you can hear or feel issues detected by the engine monitor you don't need one. Certainly you are better than I am.

I don't mean to say I'm good enough to sense issues or diagnose problems without an engine monitor.  But I do believe checking the engine monitor every couple of minutes is more than enough.  And for issues that might happen suddenly, there is usually an indication of power loss or roughness. Usually other issues like temperature move very slowly and checking every couple of minutes is fine.

I just don't think the engine monitor needs to be in my scan like the standard 6 pack does.

I've added a pic of my panel. It is interesting to see what others have in there's and how mine appears to be so cluttered with dual this and dual that.  image.jpeg

As you can see space can be a little tight in airways uk aircraft. However she is a beautiful ship. I will put the JPI next to the right hand altimeter, possibly put put the adf onto the HSI but am not sure yet.  That tends to cost a little money while the JPI is cheap in reality for what it gives me.

That is quite an interesting collection of hardware you have there. I recall someone saying that dual altimeters were required in Europe. It is interesting you have an HSI, a second CDI and separate CDI for the GPS. I thought there was a switching option available to allow your HSI to operate with either the GPS or the VOR/ILS. What does the right side of your panel look like? Do you have two standard Nav/Coms and a GPS?

Now if I was spending YOUR money, I would stick in an Aspen PFD and have the GPS, one of the Nav/Coms and the ADF (I know they are still used regularly in Europe) ported to it and keep just the Nav head that can be switched between GPS and VOR mode for the second Nav/Com. That would free up two holes in the panel.

It's fun spending someone else's money! :D

WARNING:  THREAD DRIFT

I like the glove box you have incorporated above the transponder.  Would you mind sending a better picture of that so I can get some ideas about how to incorporate the same into my panel?

No problem Brandon. It's a great place to stash cords and sic-sacs (just in case).

You may notice I was awaiting new knobs for my panel/instrument light dimmers.
