Had a strange event today.  Was leaving for a cross country, run up ok.  On roll out oil temp was already 200. After rotate and in climb, oil started getting hotter to 225 then 240 holy cow.  Leveled off to get some air flowing now at 260 near red line.  1500 ft, 180 degree turn, cancel IFR, contact tower straight to the numbers.  Taxi to hangar and temp in the red, then no temp showing.  CHT, EGT, oil pressure all normal.  This is all indicated on the G-1000. De-cowled and check the oil sender plug under the cooler.  The oil probe sender has two wires molded with two leads.  The leads are connected to the harness by handshake connectors.  The connectors had some oil in them inside the plastic shells covering them.  Cleaned the connectors with acetone.  Tested connector separated and oil indication on G-1000 top of temp with no temp indication. Reconnected and shows normal at that time now 135.  Ran up to test oil went to 145 and stayed.  Flew my trip and all normal to and from. Do you think that oil on the handshake connectors can stop continuity and create the gradual rising temp?

FYI, first trip after oil change and the oil sender leads were tie wrapped to the oil separator lines which had some oil on the lines.

Could be the week for funny oil temps...

i waited and waited for OilT to show.  Tapped on the gauge and it came alive...

The important part of oil is it's viscosity.  If you are getting normal pressure indication, the OilT is probably not telling the truth.

If OilT has really gone towards redline, the oil viscosity has gone to a watery viscosity, the OilP will also get low....

you will probably start smelling oil vapor if it is really getting that hot.

oil on the connectors probably has nothing to do with the reading.  The connection already has zero resistance, oil can't make it more or less than zero...?  Clean up and re-connect.

PP logic only.  I am not a mechanic.

Best regards,

Doesn't appear that you were getting a accurate oil temperature. Whenever you see escalating oil temp in the air look at oil pressure to collaborate. With those temperatures you would see oil pressure falling into the yellow arc and certainly not holding steady in the green/normal range. If OP is falling too, then you do need to be immediately concerned.

Russ, you did right by doing an about-face and also inspecting, cleaning, and re-testing.  Run your scenario by Brian Kendrick (830-370-1190) if you'd like a mechanic/IA perspective.  Tell him I sent you.  :-)

Don't take my thoughts as gospel cuz I'm no A/P, but I think you solved your problem. I've learned that the connectors into the G1000 system can be quite finicky and often just need to be cleaned and tightened. I had similar bizarre behavior with the MP reading where the connector thingie (now you know why I'm not an A/P) had gotten loose and just needed to be cleaned and tightened. Now it's part of regular maintenance at each oil change just to check all those things.

Yep, the old drop in manifold pressure gets your attention too.  I have had that also over BFE West Texas.  Everything else was reading normal so I am tending to believe it was a misreading of the temp because of the connectors.  It was a good engine out training exercise and fortunately my passenger was/is a MAPA Proficiency instructor, ha.
