carusoam Posted January 5, 2016 Report Posted January 5, 2016 Any time you and Jan are on the East Coast again, Jolie? Thinking out loud, -a- 2 Quote
mooneygirl Posted January 5, 2016 Author Report Posted January 5, 2016 We were just in Florida doing the seminar a few months ago! We do have two more slots open for 2016 if there is any sort of sponsoring group. Of course this was developed as Mooney-specific, but now we do a more "generic" version and of course our Mooney-centric! So far we have turned two of our attendees in years past to private pilots. All part of our plan!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49evPBYkz1w Quote
Marauder Posted January 5, 2016 Report Posted January 5, 2016 Any time you and Jan are on the East Coast again, Jolie? Thinking out loud, -a- So Anthony, can we tie this into the subject I emailed you about? Looks like a great topic and we have an airport willing to sponsor us with a room to hold the event. Whatcha think Mr. Cruise Director? You need something to top your last event. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted January 5, 2016 Report Posted January 5, 2016 Nancy and another 20(?) spouses took Jolie & Jan's course @ Mooney Summit - Panama City Beach last fall. She might want to do it again though she's way too old to get a PPL! <duck> 2 Quote
carusoam Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 Idea flow... (Not intending to over run the OP) Jolie, can you PM me some ideas on the scale of the sponsors required? I would like to send a few people through your program... And your thoughts on these.... Atlantic City in the summer... Some interesting night life, shows and concerts. Very capable places for meetings and hotels of various prices. KACY Wildwood in the summer... Classic Jersey Shore (not Seaside/TV classic) KWWD Ocean City, NJ... Family, Board Walk, Beach. Smaller venue with airport by the sea (similar to your home base with Jersey flair) 26N Let us know what dates look like they might fit yours and Jan's schedule. I really like the video skills that you continue build each time you present! Best regards, -a- Quote
Becca Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 May I recommend in addition to attending this wonderful seminar, you also get your partners some actual in-airplane flight instruction? The original pre-modified AOPA pinch hitter course included 3 hrs of flight instruction, and as I understand this from friends partners (some of whom went on to get their licenses) found this very valuable. I think the best way to do it is to have the instructor in the left seat and your partner in the right seat and you not in the airplane so you don't stress them out. A ground school class can only go so far. Every plane is different, unique radios, unique autopilot, other tools which may help them in an emergency, you want your partner to get the feel of you handling the airplane without you looking over their shoulder and them sensing your body language or stress (trust me, this happens). Jolie and Jan, suggestion, it would be awesome if you had a companion course for pilots on how to make flying easier on partners, how to use non-flying but interested regular passengers for CRM, etc.. I feel like some primary pilots could use some basics on this and some couples do this very successfully, while others don't. Just a suggestion. 1 Quote
mooneygirl Posted January 6, 2016 Author Report Posted January 6, 2016 Becca You are correct here and we do recommend that our non-flying partners get Mooney specific instruction while flying in the right seat. One of the things we suggest is that our attendee ask for a gift certificate for three hours in the airplane. Our biggest recommendation is that during the instruction, the pilot/owner is not in the airplane. On an interesting note the organizer of the Camarillo, CA event is allowing pilots on a space-available basis to attend with their non-flying companion. We will see how that goes. In my opinion, the reason that AOPA discontinued the flight instruction was liability. We are working with Mooney to have our seminar at MAPA include time in the Red-bird simulator with a Mooney CFII. Believe me I know what you mean about CRM. With my former husband, that was a challenge. Jan and I are just really happy to be presenting our seminar. At the very least it means that we get to hang out four or five times a year! 2 Quote

steingar Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 I've always wanted to do this for Mrs. Steingar, but I doubt she could do the gear swing in any event. I'm pretty healthy, too. 1 Quote
mooneygirl Posted January 7, 2016 Author Report Posted January 7, 2016 In most cases we are recommending Slow It and Slide It --keeping the gear up. There are a few exceptions. Swinging the gear from the right is a difficult thing. But it can be learned and practiced. Bill Wheat Mooney Guru, "Slow it and slide it on the belly" comes to a stop about five times faster than on the gear. Quote
carusoam Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Steingar, Please realize it is an emergency. Something has incapacitated the pilot... 1) Getting the plane to the ground with as little energy left, is pretty much the new flight plan. 2) Getting the gear down pretty much becomes optional. See how important this type of training can be? A solid Plan B is best for everyone else in the plane. If the pilot's incapacitation is not deadly, this would be good for him too. The plane is going to give it's best for your protection. We will salute it for giving it's best to protect the passengers. There is a nice part of having a group training on this topic. There isn't anyone better than Jolie and Jan to deliver the message. My wife took a similar training the first year we had a Mooney. Her comfort level while flying increased tremendously after understanding what everything does and how to use it. Huge value, difficult to explain to some right seaters... If that works for you, she will ask to be the one to lower the gear, operate the flaps and be more helpful on all phases of flight. The really cool part is they become integrated into the whole flying is for everyone scheme. Familiarity leads to comfort. If she is comfortable in your plane while you fly, Mooney Life is good! As for me, we achieved the maximum comfort level. Everyone on board falls asleep taxiing to the runway. Single pilot IFR is a Lot of work. If you can get an additional pair of hands to help out. That would be great. Then the years go by, the plane has grown and changed, the kids drive cars... I would like to see them all get the training refreshed. These conversations become more normal with age. The first time discussing possible incapacitation of one's spouse and how your fate may be changed is not usually comfortable for the non-pilot crowd. Jolie is a Pro at this topic as well. Also know that it doesn't take any strength to put the gear down. She may learn that too. (Different topic) I am really hoping we can successfully bring this training to NJ. Jolie, I could really use some help dropping the proper hints and opening the topic and getting my subjects to the training (two girls, one boy, ages 50 down to 16) Best regards, -anthony- Quote

gsxrpilot Posted January 24, 2016 Report Posted January 24, 2016 "Slow and slide it in" seems about right since very few of the vintage Mooney's have brake peddles on the right side. 1 Quote
